I'm lost and I can't reply to posts in the old forums and all my PMs are gone and the old communal viewing threads!!! (Cass, I'd really like to keep those!)
Re: Daily News - August 2006

I had 3788 posts, too. [image]

I don't think anything is in trouble, right? Just seems like it's time or something for them to switch boards - but I think we'll have time to save/copy any posts or PMs ... right?

Yeah well, I don't like changes very much and it's weird that the communal viewing threads have not been moved/linked along. Should I save them to my harddrive if I want to keep them?

Ta, Lynn!
So as not to spoil the organisation of the new, improved boards within the first hour of their existence, where is one supposed to moan about such things as threads that were initially not moved along. I'm sure it doesn't go under the heading of Daily News. :-[

For now I would say put all questions, concerns and complaints in the Questions or Comments About This Forum board under About the Forum. Sorry, guys. Hopefully, we can have things running smoothly in a short time.

Please note that we are not moving actual posts to this board. Only links are being given to the old threads. It is my understanding that the old Deppography board will be closed in September, so for those who want to save actual posts such as those in the communal viewing threads, you may want to save them to your hard drives. If anyone knows of an easy way to transport them to the new forum, please speak up.

Here is some news! Somewhat good news too!

Sophia Loren has been voted the world's most naturally beautiful person, at the age of 71.

The sultry Italian star beat a host of younger names such as Cameron Diaz and Pirates of the Caribbean actor Johnny Depp to the title.

Loren puts her curves and complexion down to "a love of life, spaghetti, and the odd bath in virgin olive oil".

The silver screen icon has spoken about resisting pressure to have cosmetic surgery on her nose early in her career.

Her status as one of the world's sex symbols shows no signs of diminishing - she is appearing in next year's Pirelli calendar, alongside Penelope Cruz and Naomi Watts.

Even the Archbishop of Genoa once observed that although the Vatican opposed human cloning, "an exception might be made in the case of Sophia Loren".

Second place goes to grey-haired heart-throb George Clooney followed by curvy Welsh opera turned pop star Charlotte Church.

Catherine Zeta Jones is next, followed by Depp, Kate Winslet and Gwyneth Paltrow.

Actor Jack Black is eighth, followed by Hollywood actress Diaz and presenter Gail Porter, who gets into the list for being "comfortable with who she is" despite losing her hair.

The online poll asked 1,578 people for their verdict on the world's most naturally beautiful, for The Dare To Be Bare Awards for celebrities who do not conform to stereotypes.

The world's top 10 naturally beautiful people:
1. Sophia Loren
2. George Clooney
3. Charlotte Church
4. Catherine Zeta Jones
5. Johnny Depp
6. Kate Winslet
7. Gwyneth Paltrow
8. Jack Black
9. Cameron Diaz
10. Gail Porter

Jack Black?! Huh? What were they thinking? [image]
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by kristen on Aug 13, 2006, 9:09pm

Hmm, very weird list. :D I would only have put about three of those people on there. ???
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by stunnedtina on Aug 13, 2006, 10:13pm

That is a weird list there. Jack Black? Strange and why the poop is Johnny #5. I think whoever makes up these list are nuts personally!
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by alhana on Aug 14, 2006, 7:46am

I can't take any beauty poll seriously when Jack Black ends up in the top 10.
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by cass on Aug 14, 2006, 9:27am

really dumb poll. i agree only 3 or 4 of them deserve to be on that list. and georgie is not more beautiful than johnny. just not. and if they wanted to go for an aging beauty they should have voted for catherine deneuve.

sorry for my weird typing. i'm having trouble with my left hand and it's difficult for me to use the shift key.

Some news! [image] Johnny and some other celebrities have autographed a football jersey from the Philadelphia Soul football team, that is co-owned by rocker Jon Bon Jovi. The jersey and a few others are being auctioned off on eBay. The proceeds will go to a charity called Project H.O.M.E., a local Philadelphia charity. Johnny probably signed the jersey when he was appearing on Extra for the POTC2 interviews.

I wish I could afford this :D But I'm proud of this [image]

Here is the article that I found on my Yahoo news alerts...

http://www.oursportscentral.com/services/releases/?id=3362506

Soul Co-Owner Jon Bon Jovi Sets up Benfit Ebay Auction
08/14/06 - Arena Football League (AFL) Philadelphia Soul

Philadelphia Soul
PHILADELPHIA - Philadelphia Soul co-owner Jon Bon Jovi placed four autographed Soul Jerseys on eBay for auction today, Monday, August 14, to raise money for Project H.O.M.E in Philadelphia. Three of the jerseys contain celebrity signatures from Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Uma Thurman, Luke Wilson, Rainn Wilson, Scarlett Johannsen, Tommy Lee and "Extra's" Mark McGrath - all of which were gathered by the nationally syndicated entertainment news magazine show Extra throughout several days of superstar interviews.

Additionally, signatures gathered by Bon Jovi himself, which also appear on some of the jerseys, include Michael Douglas, Diana Ross, Jessica Alba, Shannon Elizabeth, Sheryl Crow, Kanye West, Eva Longoria, Anna Nicole Smith, Kelly Osbourne, Jenny McCarthy, Slash, Clay Aiken and Kix Brooks, among others.

Extra recently took Jon Bon Jovi's philanthropic endeavors to heart when the rock star, who has a track record of charitable involvement, asked the show's on-air personalities to autograph a handful of Philadelphia Soul Jerseys and was thrilled when the show took it one step further. By bringing the jerseys with them as they interviewed some of the world's biggest stars, they collected autographs along the way. When Extra's New York correspondent, Tanika Ray, interviewed Jon Bon Jovi at one of the bands three sold-out homecoming shows at Giants Stadium which closed out the band's "Have a Nice Day" World Tour, she surprised the star with the good deed that her show had done. The three jerseys, along with a fourth autographed jersey that the band brought to the 2004 American Music Awards, will now be auctioned on eBay in order to raise money for Project H.O.M.E. in Philadelphia.

"My mission with the Philadelphia Soul has been to use the team as a means to help local charities and causes in the community," says Jon Bon Jovi. "'Extra' took up the challenge. My sincere gratitude to Extra and to all the celebrities who were generous with their time and added their signatures to help me raise money for the incredible work that Project H.O.M.E. does."

The Philadelphia Soul franchise launched in 2004 with a commitment to become more than just a sports franchise. Their involvement with local charities within the Philadelphia community remains strong. Each season the Soul identifies local causes with whom they partner. The Soul donates money and time to the worthy charities and also help raise the awareness of the cause among their fans and the local Philadelphia market.

This year, Jon Bon Jovi and the Soul have partnered with Project H.O.M.E. - a nonprofit organization founded by Sister Mary Scullion and Joan Dawson McConnon in 1989. The organization provides a full range of services for chronically homeless people with mental illness and/or substance abuse disorders, including street outreach, safe havens, permanent supportive housing and a range of services to supplement housing. This continuum is an important part of Project H.O.M.E.'s success: each person is recognized as an individual with unique needs. Services at each facility are different; some residents are not ready to accept regimented drug or alcohol treatment, while others may be able to live almost independently. Largely responsible for drastically reducing the issue of homelessness in the city of Philadelphia, Project H.O.M.E. is recognized nationally as a model program that other organizations addressing the issue of homelessness strive to emulate in helping solve the problems they face in their own cities.

Season tickets for the Soul's 2007 season are on sale now. Tickets start as low as $96. For more information call (888) PHIL-AFL or log on to www.philadelphiasoul.com. The Soul are entering their fourth season in the AFL and have drawn a League best 387,491 fans combined during the past three years.

Gilly, on the Zone, posted this link to a forum discussing Sweeney Todd. If it's to be believed, production is due to start in February; Sondheim seems to be on board; and they are actively looking to cast the other roles. It sounds like they will be doing some modification of storyline toward the end. Interesting.

Not only that, but the clips they sneaked at ComicCon showed Jack in the Asian garb. I kept all my Asian garb wallpaper up if people are interested and somehow missed it (if you were living in a cave or something). Here is the link to all Jack Sparrow wallpapers:
http://www.ohjohnny.net/wallpaper/wallpaperjack.html

I'd received that photo of Kiera yesterday and the sender said she got it from Keira's Tribute site. So I credited them.

Greepy, fabulous find. I have more info on the cards on my pirate news pages. I hadn't seen that one before, but I have a link there to many photos of Tia Dalma's costume.

For those who do not speak Spanish, "Tia" means "Aunt." So Dalma is her real name.

SPOILER DISCUSSION BRIEFLY - highlight to read
It is my belief that Dalma is really the Goddess Calypso held captive as it were in human form. I could be way way off, but I do believe she was Davy Jones' lover (and probably Jack's from the sound of things) in the past.

I am skeptical, to say the least. And anyway, won't Johnny be smack in the middle of filming in LA? And isn't this around when Keith is expected to be doing his filming? (I don't know exactly when that's planned, but presumably it'd be before the Rolling Stones tour kicks off again on Sept. 20). Hard to believe they'd plan a long weekend in Plan de la Tour in the middle of all this for some rushed ceremony. Nuh uh, won't believe this one until I see proof...

It will be interesting to see how Johnny manages to be in 2 places at once, since he's due to still be filming through September on Pirates3.

I think the German press is making it up. I don't think Johnny or Vanessa would announce something like that to the press. He is Mr. Ultra-private. Can you imagine him doing it up like Madonna or Brad & Jen? No way. [image]

Yes, Johnny, please only make obscure Indie films so we can never see you (those of us outside NYC and LA, of course), yet talk endlessly about what an artistic genius you are.

An indie film would be just fine w/ me. I'm selfish and I'm tired of sharing him with a world that doesn't appreciate or understand him. :P

Well it would be the cherry on top of his being settled and tamed and predictable. :'( Oh Johnny, don't you understand our needs? I sleep next to a married, settled, tamed and predictable man every night; I need you to dream about. [image]

Anna, you are so right. I need him as he is. Although I know that Vanessa is there I sort of ignore her. She's not part of my world. Him getting married would kill me. I could not cope. I would have to abandon ship and return to the mad and the dangerous on the Pete boards.

oh i have to ask this--why do you think he's become predictable? he's doing a trilogy because he gets to play a pirate, and even then he changed character enough that some people were complaining. in between he's still doing the same odd choices, quirky takes, and risky ventures he always did.

having said that, somebody on another board said he's signed up for 5 pirate movies :o

The only really quirky thing he's done inbetween is Libertine which he sort of detached himself from after it wrapped. The rest, the Burton projects and FN, are pretty mainstream projects or, as he himself refers to them, films one can see with the kids.
In my eyes he's become the all American hero with the obligatory European wife, perfect kids and matching 'good' taste in olde worldy stuff such as food, drink, fashion and art. He's great mates with all the Hollywood hotshots both onscreen and offscreen, he does a lot for kids' charities (aaaww) and he's every PR person's dream.
I'd rather be surprised by him undertaking a weird project professionally or socially (how I miss the likes of Hunter) than by him being without glasses and hat at the contentwise completely empty (yawn) Letterman interview.
Libertine and his out-of-this-world outer beauty have been, to me, the only enticing and fascinating things Depp offered us during the last three years.

Mind you, this is MY opinion and I appreciate that most of you won't agree with me one bit.

in between the pirate movies he did:

sw
ils se marierent
libertine
catcf

fn and ouatim were both shot before potc. i don't know how you can say he distanced himself from libertine. he was instrumental in getting in made in the first place! and he did participate in what publicity they had for it. what else could he have done?

sw and catcf were "mainstream" i suppose, but it's always been his performances that have set him apart, not just his choice in movies. both performances stirred a lot of controversy.

but you're right that you're entitled to your opinion. but if you find him so dull now i have to ask, why are you here? don't take offense, please, i really am just curious.

Anyway, we shall soon find out, whether this is truth or not. Marriage banns have to published in France minimum ten days before the wedding. So, if there is a wedding, people can get knowledge of it in advance.

Being married would make lots of things easier for both of them, as far as residence in the US for Vanessa and Europe for Johnny is concerned.

And a marriage vow wouldn't make Johnny any less interesting for me.

I never said I find him dull and I mainly come here for the community; one can find Depp stuff and Depp admirers all over The Net. What I've always liked about these boards is the fact that one can voice and discuss/test one's opinions even, or especially, if they are somewhat different.

well technically speaking the other celebs should get discussed in the Off Topic forum. not that we crack down on that sort of thing but if we're gonna go into an in-depth discussion, good or bad, about somebody else, it should be taken over there.

back to johnny, he is the reason for the existence of this forum to begin with. we love to hang out with each other too, but most of us share a love and admiration for the man, not just some of his performances. i'm not saying people who don't share that admiration shouldn't be here. they should be prepared to be disagreed with though.

As perhaps the instigator of the Pete stuff, I'll say this. To me (but not to that many, I know) he is a fascinating and potentially dangerous mix of musical genius, literate creativity, a troubled boy, victim of his own sucess and a certain damaged type of beauty. Not in control, but with the potential to be great. To me at least he has a goodness about him that goes beyond the publicity. If you like, not unlike a certain Mr Depp a few years back.

When he used to write on the old balachada site he was wonderful.

So for these reasons, and maybe more, I'm devoted. But if this upsets people here well, that's fine, maybe you should just say and I'll give it a rest.

And Anna, devil's avocate? Why not. Maybe Johnny has relied too much lately on the physical beauty thing and skipped on the creative side. Perhaps he is selling out. Disney commercials? Tragic.

This is so much fun! 8-)

Ok, my two cents.

Johnny, get married, have more babies, be happy, live a life. Blessings on ya.

As long as you keep making movies I like, I'll keep watching them. I haven't liked his last few movies. I liked his performance in TL and I think I'm really going to like DMC in the long run. I've only seen it once though, so I can't judge if it has staying power for me. But if you think about it, out of all his movies (how many has he done? Like 35?) I probably only watch 5 or 6 of them over and over and over again. Only a handful make my list of can't live without.

I'm much more freaked about the thought of him doing a movie based on a Broadway musical than I am about the thought of him getting married.

Vanessa plays no part in my JD fantasy now, nor would she if they made it legal. He'll never be an actual part of my real life so what's the diff? I do want him to be happy and healthy and long lived... if Vanessa helps him in that capacity, thats fine by me. It wouldn't really matter who the woman was, as long as she makes him happy.

I don't like to see people self destruct in front of my eyes. I don't get the whole Pete thing either. At least when Johnny was in self destruct mode he was tragically beautiful. Dougherty just looks like a street junkie with hyperthyroid eyes. I don't get it... especially since three of my longtime mates here really dote on him! :D Endora, kristen and anna........ you're really gonna have to explain all that to me.

Re: Daily News - August 2006

oh come on guys. relied on his physical beauty? when everybody said he looked like a freak in CATCF? and look at all the dirt and scars and messed up teeth (and legendary bad breath) he gave Captain Jack? clearly he intended him to be a ladies man only in his own mind. liz was just as much repelled by him as attracted to him. not to mention libertine, where his condition in the last 20 minutes or so can only be described as grotesque.

as far as creativity goes, the only one of those roles i mentioned that i can imagine anyone else doing is, ironically enough, john wilmot. i think some other actors could have pulled that one off. johnny made it special of course. but the other two, ww and jack, i don't think there's an actor around who could have created and embodied those 2 roles.

Tragic.

I don't think he is selling out. I think he has simply matured and learned to play the game a bit. Watching all the press for DMC I have watched him behave himself and do as they ask and make his appearances but I still see that hint of mischief in his eyes. He chuckles to himself alot, I've noticed, and I can't help but think about whats going through his mind when he does that. If he were completely tame I don't think we would be hearing him talk to RS about getting plowed on rum and shagging the cabin boy.

But I do have to agree that seeing him in a commercial would just hurt my heart. Hopefully its either total BS or they just mean a clip from the movie or something.

This is all just intellectual stimulation for me. I love a good debate. I hope the sun comes out for you soon and mood improves. People click with others for a number of mysterious reasons that none of us can really explain. It's about feelings and intuition. There are plenty of people who can not comprehend why we love Johnny so much either. We know because we have that in common. But even in that commonality we vary widely as we can see by our reaction to the marriage rumor.

I hope I haven't contributed to your bad day.

oh come on guys. relied on his physical beauty? when everybody said he looked like a freak in CATCF? and look at all the dirt and scars and messed up teeth (and legendary bad breath) he gave Captain Jack? clearly he intended him to be a ladies man only in his own mind. liz was just as much repelled by him as attracted to him. not to mention libertine, where his condition in the last 20 minutes or so can only be described as grotesque.

as far as creativity goes, the only one of those roles i mentioned that i can imagine anyone else doing is, ironically enough, john wilmot. i think some other actors could have pulled that one off. johnny made it special of course. but the other two, ww and jack, i don't think there's an actor around who could have created and embodied those 2 roles.

Yeah, I have to agree that most of Johnny's roles could have only been done by him. I'm always amazed by the thought that Sands was written for George Clooney! I can not imagine anybody else doing Sands. It would have been a totally different character and movie.

Sands, WW, Jack, Gilbert, Sam, William Blake, Ichabod... are all distinctly Johnny Depp characters. If others had played them they wouldn't have been even remotely similar. He put his stamp on those characters. And yet none of them are similar to each other or to Johnny himself. But then, that's his genius, isn't it. I doubt anyone thinks he relies on his physical beauty for his roles. He doesn't even pick roles where physical beauty is important. He picks characters who have an interesting inner life. And somehow he manages to make that invisible inner life visible on screen.

i agree though, that not all his movies are eminently rewatchable. but can you say that about any actor with this many movies under his belt? let me use my all-time favorite dead actor of all time, humphrey bogart, as an example. he was always facinating to watch, even if the rest of the movie was a bore. but of the movies he made, i'd say only 5 or 6 were ones that i'd watch again and again (no, casablanca is not one of them. i must be the only person on the planet who feels that way).

While I agree that Clooney would've made it a totally different movie, I did see the movie From Dusk Till Dawn, and from what I remember of it, I could see how Rodriguez may have originally envisioned that role for him. And I think he could've pulled off something fun, but of course thank goodness it never happened, because instead we got to see Johnny's brilliance.

Similarly, I *finally* got to see Sin City a couple of months ago (I don't know why- I was really looking forward to the movie but somehow didn't get around to seeing it until recently. While Johnny was listed for awhile on IMDB as "Wallace"- a character that wasn't even in the 3 stories depicted in Sin City (but he's apparently a main character of Sin City 3, hint hint ;) ) Rodriguez insists that it was Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro's character) who Johnny was to have played. Seeing the movie, I *loved* Benicio's take on the role, but I could SO see Johnny in the role, too, and I think he would have had a BLAST playing Jackie Boy. Too bad we never got to see it.

I guess my only point is, how things end up getting cast can certainly alter the flavor of a movie, but not necessarily with tragic results [image]

Quote:

Absolutely not, though even though I don't think he ever *relied* on it, the notion of his physical beauty always reminds me of Roux, for some reason. Here is what I always felt was the closest he ever came to being the dashing, physically beautiful and alluring "romantic lead" (even though it wasn't really a lead role... but you know what I mean. But see, he even makes the traditional love interest into something unique and intriguing.

Hey, I think 5 or 6 movies out of a lifetime body of work is pretty good! I can't think of another actor's movies that I do that with. There are other movies that I'll own and re-watch, but the actors vary.

Oddly enough, the only other actor's movies that I own more than two of is Robin Williams. Go figure. I own Death to Smoochy, What Dreams May Come, and The Fisher King, (also, One Hour Photo, but I got that as a freebie with another movie, pretty good movie though) and who hasn't watched Mrs Doubtfire, Jumanji, Hook several times. And I've enjoyed many more. He's had an interesting career.

This shouldn't have turned into a Doherty v. Depp discussion. I was joking with the Depp to Doherty remark referring to Ms. Moss (and please don't switch to making this a Kate v. Van discussion) Explain about Doherty? Endora can do a far better job on that but why should she have to defend herself? I too didn't used to like Doherty but because I so trust and value my longtime mates kristen and endora's opinion I began to look round for stuff on the guy. A few months ago I saw an impromptu interview on Dutch television when he was in Amsterdam and I found him to be inebriated but utterly charming and intelligent. A few weeks later he was on the Jonathan Ross show and, to me, it was the most impressive interview of the year. He was vulnerable, charming, sweet, witty, poetic, polite and his acoustic rendition of Beg, Steal or Borrow afterwards brought me, the audience and JR to tears. Such a shame if he would lose the battle against himself. Ross offered to adopt him. He does remind me of Shane Mc Gowan, a bit of Hunter S. Thompson and yes, a young Johnny (Pete is only 27) I don't 'dote' on Doherty for his physical beauty, I don't romanticise self-medication but I do find comfort in the fact that there still are special individuals like Pete Doherty.

I don't know much about Pete but it sounds like he's very misunderstood. Yeah there are the drugs but I'm guessing most people don't know what's underneath that -- the real person. Just cause all the media ever does is play up that side of him.

That's like Serge Gainsbourg. Van said in some interview that people just saw him as this poor drunk but that he was something else entirely.

No, not annoying, actually quite right. My fault entirely. Sorry. But thank you for providing a place where we can say what we feel without getting deleted or whatever. It means a lot, really.

Final points from me (at least on this thread.) Firstly, Anna, on the nail with your assessment as ever. Far better than I could do today, far, far better. And second, thanks to all about my bad day, which started bad for humdrum domestic reasons and got a damn site worse when I read the wedding rumours. Johnny Depp and Tim Burton Set for DreamWorks and Warner Bros. Co-Production of 'Sweeney Todd'
Wednesday August 16, 1:20 pm ET

LOS ANGELES, Aug. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- DreamWorks Studios announced today that Johnny Depp has been set to star and Tim Burton to direct "Sweeney Todd," the award-winning Stephen Sondheim musical thriller.

The co-production with Warner Bros. will star Johnny Depp as the titular Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Depp is currently starring in the record-breaking blockbuster, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

"Sweeney Todd" marks the 6th collaboration between the actor and director. The previous Burton-Depp films have been "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," "Corpse Bride," "Ed Wood," "Edward Scissorhands" and "Sleepy Hollow."

Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald will partner with Richard Zanuck and John Logan to produce the screenplay adaptation which was written by Logan. Production is planned to begin early next year for a late 2007 release. Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically and Warner Bros. internationally.

The Broadway production of "Sweeney Todd," with Sondheim's music and lyrics and a book by Hugh Wheeler based on the play by Christopher Bond, opened in 1979 and won eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Its mix of the comic, the dramatic and the macabre held together by Sondheim's movie-like score has had hundreds of productions throughout the world. A highly acclaimed revival is now playing in New York.

The story of "Sweeney Todd" is of a wrongfully imprisoned barber in Victorian England who sets out to seek revenge on the judge who imprisoned him. The plot is foreshadowed in the first lines of the opening number: "Attend the tale of Sweeney Todd./His skin was pale and his eye was odd./He shaved the faces of gentlemen/Who never thereafter were heard of again."

Sondheim is known in the theater for the lyrics to "West Side Story" and "Gypsy," the music and lyrics for "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," "Company," "Follies," "A Little Night Music" and the Pulitzer Prize-winning "Sunday in the Park With George," among others, as well as the film scores of "Stavisky" and "Reds" (the latter co-written with Dave Grusin) and the Academy Award®-winning Best Original Song "Sooner or Later" from the Warren Beatty movie "Dick Tracy."

Former DreamWorks co-heads Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald have produced or executive produced a wide range of critically and commercially successful films, including the Oscar-winning "Gladiator," the "Men In Black" and "Ring" series, as well as "Catch Me If You Can," "Minority Report," and "The Terminal," the latter all directed by Steven Spielberg.

"Sweeney Todd" will mark Richard Zanuck's third collaboration with DreamWorks, having produced "Deep Impact" and "Road to Perdition" for the studio. The film will also mark Zanuck's reunion with Johnny Depp and Tim Burton with whom he produced last year's international hit "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Among his many films, Zanuck won a Best Picture Oscar as a producer for "Driving Miss Daisy" and has received the Academy's Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award for consistently producing high quality motion pictures.

Tim Burton is also developing the Paramount production of "Ripley's Believe It Or Not."

Producer/Writer John Logan's most recent screenplays were "The Aviator" and "The Last Samurai," and he was nominated for an Oscar for his work on DreamWorks' "Gladiator."

I am 100% serious when I say that I love Johnny unconditionally.
I can forgive that man anything.
We all have lousy days, make bad decisions, say things we regret later, but movie stars are living under a microscope almost 24/7. Could any of us stand that kind of constant pressure?

I'm sure it won't come as a surprise when I confess I wanted to be an actress/singer/comedian until I realised that the pursuit of that life would chew me up and spit me out.

I want Johnny to have as many blessings as he can have because I have been blessed with the revelation of his BEING, as have we all.

I have learned to keep a wide open mind with Johnny's work, as he has never failed to delight me.
Sweeney Todd it is, then.

here's some box office news. DMC has risen since the weekend, like it did last week. it went from #6 to #5, showing great resilience. schools in session in most of the country so numbers are lower now, but it's still on track to cross $400 mil on sunday. and here's something i don't think i mentioned yet. johnny's actually had 2 films in the box office charts. dmc is still on the top 20 list. until a couple of weeks ago, it was in the top 10. reminds me of that glorious month, 3 years ago, when ouatim opened at #1 and potc was still #5 after 2 months! a box office achievement few movies can claim!

I'm kinda worried about that too. But he always seems to pull it out of his hat when he needs it. No matter what 'it' is.

I'll just have to have faith.

The thing that keeps me even somewhat hopeful about this movie is that it's such a twisted little story. I can see it's appeal to him and to Tim.

I'd just like to say that no matter if I like the movie or story itself, there's always something fascinating to gain from watching a Depp performance (or appearance for that matter, even thought the questions are mundane). I don't think he's forgotten how to stay true to his values. I trust him to continue making his own career choices according to what he feels is best at the time. He has to remain challenged and interested in order to keep delivering the goods. If that means Sweeney Todd right now, then I'll go along for the ride.

And getting married in the middle of Pirates 3 filming? ::) Puleeze!

edit: And I'm really glad to be part of a group where we are diverse in opinions and can show our passion! Whether that be for Johnny getting married, his career choices, whatever. At least we are united in our love for him....and the mighty crotch! We seem to be able to discuss anything intelligently. I love it here!

I seem to be in the minority, but I find something sort of sickly exciting about the prospect of him doing Sweeney Todd, especially if he may not be able to pull it off! Does that make me a sadist? :D But I think it's about that challenge- trying something he's never done before, even if he fails (if he does sing, which is the way it sounds right now). This is the kind of thing he always talks about... whenever he begins to feel satisfied and complacent, that's when it's all over. Also, it helps that I love horror and I love musicals (or used to, anyway- I don't really see any these days). I recently got a CD of Sweeney Todd highlights, and I enjoyed it so much that I just ordered a DVD (I think it's an '82 production, not with Len Cariou of the original cast but it does have Angela Lansbury). I look forward to seeing it when it arrives!

does it hurt to say that I don't care If his married or not ? cause i really don't !!! it don't make a difference to me at all . same man , same heart , same soul , same artist I loved all along the way .

He can do movies that might be a little too mainstream for our tast , but htat's just because we're not used to having the whole world liking him wiht us , so this is just new to us a little freaking out and jealousy is fine , I've felt some jealouse when everyone started talking about him with all the DMC hoopla . But to proove that he's still UNpredictable , we would've have never beleived 9 or 7 years ago that he would do somthing as big and child- friendly as POTCs , but he surpurised us all and did so ! and he'll do just exactly that when he does ST , wether he fails or not it shouldn't matter ! It's not about the finished painting wether it pretty or not it's about the work , the technice , the feelings it's been made with . He is an artist , failiar and success should be least of his worries . It never worried Da vinci , so it shouldn't worry Johnny either .
for anyone who might think he's selling out , or that he might've lost grip over things ..... fear not ! he'll surpurise you , and win your heart all over again [image] , setlling down (whatever that means )won't hurt this man's creative mind , and he's never be the usuall all around american superstar .

Raven, the highlight CD I got does have Lansbury and Cariou, but the DVD does not. Here is the DVD I ordered:

Sweeney Todd DVD on Amazon

It features George Hearn, who replaced Cariou. I ordered it on the 10th, and only just got the e-mail that it shipped today- not sure why there was a delay since it was supposedly in stock :( I believe the Patti LuPone one is available too, but I decided to go with the classic version.

Knowing how Johnny's speaking voice titalates my every sense, the mere thought of him singing makes my heart beat faster. I CANNOT WAIT to listen to, and watch him as he sings with that luscious voice of his. He'll be great. And if he is deemed a failure by those who are already dreading the very thought, then he'll still have the biggest balls out there, and for that, I will admire him even more.

I love Elfman, but IMHO this would be a terrible mistake. This is Sondheim's work, and tampering with that would be so wrong. I could possibly see Elfman in some role, conducting the music or serving as an adviser, but I truly hope he doesn't rework the music in any way.

In other news, a friend just sent me the Variety article about this- not much new, but it does give the additional detail that I don't think I saw in other articles today- the filming will begin in Feb. at Pinewood Studios with rehearsals to start late this year...

WB, D'Works sweet on 'Sweeney'

Burton, Depp take to 'Todd'

By CHRIS GARDNER, PAMELA MCCLINTOCK

Warner Bros. Pictures is partnering with DreamWorks on the long-gestating film version of musical "Sweeney Todd." Paramount will distribute for DreamWorks domestically, with Warner taking international rights.
Stephen Sondheim musical thriller revolves around the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, who is wrongfully imprisoned only to later seek revenge on the judge who sent him up the river.
Tim Burton will direct and Johnny Depp star in the duo's sixth collaboration.
Walter Parkes, Laurie MacDonald, Richard Zanuck and John Logan are producing from a script by Logan. Zanuck has produced several of Burton's movies, including "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Big Fish."
Warners' decision to co-produce and co-finance with DreamWorks reflects the studio's strong relationship with Burton. It also brings the project full circle.
Film version of the hit Broadway musical was first set up at Warners well over a decade ago, with Burton attached to direct. DreamWorks picked up the project when Burton fell off, and Sam Mendes came aboard to develop the film with Logan.
DreamWorks kicked "Sweeney Todd" into high gear in June, when Burton became available after Par put his "Ripley's Believe It or Not" on hold amid concerns over budget and the creative direction.
Likewise, Depp's schedule opened up when director Peter Weir ankled Warners' "Shantaram."Musical is set to begin shooting in early February at Pinewood Studios near London. "Sweeney Todd" producers said rehearsals and pre-recordings will begin in November and December.
DreamWorks -- which produced the upcoming musical "Dreamgirls"--and Warners are eyeing a late 2007 release.

Perish the thought! If anyone other than Sondheim were to modify any of the music, this would be the first Depp film I'd boycott. A talent of Sondheim's stature doesn't need any 'help' from Elfman or anyone else, nor do I think Elfman would ever agree to do something like that.

You've hit the nail on the head...that's exactly how I feel about hearing him sing. And I'm really proud of him for taking this chance whether he succeeds or not (I'm leaning towards the former...I think he can do it...although I haven't heard the music...is it very hard?). I'm ridiculously proud...it's maternal or something.

"I seem to be in the minority, but I find something sort of sickly exciting about the prospect of him doing Sweeney Todd, especially if he may not be able to pull it off! Does that make me a sadist?"

I'm right there with you! It's really only the singing that's nerve wracking. The role itself is a great part that I'd love to see Johnny play, but without the singing there's no chill factor. In fact, without the singing I don't think it would be much of a challenge for him and, although I'd still be excited, I wouldn' t be *this* excited. I saw the announcment on the Headline News scroll this evening and scared the hell out of my sister screaming my bloody head off.

I felt the same way when I heard he was going to be in a mob movie with Al Pacino (how cliche); a Polanski devil movie (Ok, I think I was right here, sorry all you Corso lovers, but I think that movie sucked IMHO...although, Johnny was good, of course :) ); an alien possessed astronaut movie (???); I felt sick to my stomach with fear when I heard about POTC *and* Willy Wonka.....and I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE him for it!

Chills, dread, fear, excitment.....for all I care, he can do Pirates of the Caribbean XII, Disney commercials, as long as every now and then he pulls a fast one like Sweeny Todd that I NEVER saw coming. It is more fun when the movie works, like CATCF, than it is when it doesn't, but his performance is always fun to watch even when the movie isn't great. (LOL...In TNG, Corso was the only thing keeping me awake.)

I swear, if I ever hear he's doing a Fred Astaire movie, I think I'll have a heart attack before it opens. :)

Haha! I opened the Boston Globe to the Arts/Style section to find a little blurb (with picture) entitled "Burton and Depp to team up again". Of course, I already knew about the whole Sweeney Todd deal from everyone here, but just seeing the blurb made me wicked, wicked happy. I haven't been able to stop dancing around.

Although the blurb also cited several of Tim and Johnny's previous projects, including Johnny's role as "the pruning-shear monster". That slightly outraged me; how DARE they speak of Edward Scissorhands like that!

(Clearly, whoever wrote the blurb has never seen the movie.) Monster, my bum. ;)

I seriously doubt Sondheim will allow that. He is one of the gods of musical theatre and the reason this film has not been made for 20 years is because he has never been satisfied with anyone's take on it. So he must like Tim and he must like Johnny. (Of course, Sondheim is gay so it's not surprising he likes Johnny, though he does tend to prefer them very blond and very young. ;))
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by cass on Aug 17, 2006, 11:50pm

one thing i'm having a hard time imagining (of all the hard things to imagine about this project) is tim following a script/story without putting his own stamp on it. it just doesn't seem like he's left himself very much wiggle room, having to keep it as a musical with music and story that are all pretty well known.
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by jd101 on Aug 18, 2006, 12:09am

Well, he certainly added his own to CATCF and gladly took the heat for it too. Also working with a family who were adamant about how the story was presented and the family gave their stamp of approval for it.

I'm thinking Tim and Johnny are so enthusiastic about their projects, they seem to be able to charm any ole' snake. ;)

Doesn't John Waters SAY Johnny CAN sing? (In the DIrector's cut Cry-Baby DVD) but they chose to go with James Intveld anyway.
You can hear Johnny sing a bit in the early CB scene where he's driving down the road with the Drapes, along side "bugging" Alison and her granny.
And Johnny says he isn't tone deaf--so, a little spit and polish may be all that's needed.

Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by cass on Aug 18, 2006, 8:02am

well the difference with catcf and st is that catcf was based on a book, which gives you a lot more liberty usually to adapt it to the screen. plus the music could be all original. here you already have the score, which normally is almost identical to the theater version, and the story doesn't allow for too many flights of fancy. about the only way i see burton doing his own take on this is visually, which would be cool. as for johnny, i'm sure he'll give us another memorable character. most americans (can't speak for other countries) probably haven't seen this on stage, so there won't be so many tiresome comparisons.

I'm giddy with anticipation. So happy this movie is getting made ahead of his other projects, and really excited about the singing. Right I'm caught up.

If Johnny is getting wed, thats very cool. Their kiddies are of an age where they can play a part in the ceremony. Jeeze they have been together longer than most married people. Plus it would mean he is a european citizen and can then travel without hassel around europe.

I thought Sweent Todd was based on a urban legend or maybe a real person, there is a Sweeney Todd waxwork in the chamber of horrors, along with all the other killers we have had here.

I best one I have seen, and heck the only one i remember is the Ray Winstone one. That was bloody good.

The Hugh Jackman comment, I found funny. I just had a vision of Wolverine in a barbers apron. That tickled me.

There were a few more points i wanted to mention but the Wolverine thing has thrown everything else outta my head :D

Yes, he does- funny, but I just happened to rewatch those DVD extras the other night. And he says he has tapes of Johnny singing (and I sit here thinking, I am only an hour from Baltimore- where is his house, I want to break into his basement and find that tape! [image] ) But I wonder if he might be just saying that to be polite, or because he loves Johnny so much. That one woman producer who said Johnny had two left feet- I wish I heard *her* discuss Johnny's singing voice- she seems like a more critical type ;D

The old Kids and folks who were around then said that Johnny "wasn't really a singer" but it's hard to say if that was because he couldn't or just because he didn't want to. One of the Bravo or 20/20 specials that shows a small video clip (which I WISH would be available to us in its entirety!!) does show him at a mic, singing. But anyway, that was so long ago.

In P, Gibby gets everyone up to the mics to help with People Who Died, but again, Johnny looks very tentative and reluctant, and you could never be able to pick out his voice. That was more chanting than singing, anyway.

I have heard that for CATCF, one of Johnny's first questions was, "Will I have to sing?" And for Corpse Bride, it's strange that he's the only major character who doesn't sing. Elfman says there was a song for Victor early on, but it was deleted before it ever got to the filming or recording stage. He doesn't say why- it could've been for time- it's a short movie but was so painstaking to film. But what if they didn't trust his voice?

On the other hand, you hear a little brief singing by Gilbert Grape (nothing fancy, but he's on key!) and Captain Jack Sparrow (I hear hints of a nice, rich baritone!) And I guess you could throw in Mort, but that was more joking-singing and I don't really count it.

But I guess what I come back to is, if Johnny thinks he is capable, then I trust him. His musicianship will be a big plus- I think that other than the real music professionals, many will accept a voice that's not fully trained, as long as he can carry a tune, and I believe he can. And if production and multiple takes can assist in improving the sound, all the better.

I'm glad I stopped in the other day and learned about the move. KTTC had me distracted for a time, but after watching the movie so many times, reading various analyses of the story, and analyzing the series to death myself, I found myself going a little off the edge of the map with the speculation and spoilers. I needed to remind myself Jack wouldn't be Jack without Ed Wood, William Blake, Raoul Duke, Bon Bon, and John Wilmott. Where better than here? Fantasy is good, especially when real life intervenes. But, since "complications arose, ensued, were overcome," as it were, I'm back.

Cathy, wanted to reply to your Sin City comments (that was you, wasn't it, lol, sorry if not), but didn't want to double post. Your assessment of the singing issue prompted me to do so anyway. :)

IMHO, I'm glad Johnny didn't do Sin City. The story had a clever circular thing going in the script, I'll give it that, and I liked Bruce Willis' character. However, so much violence brought me down. Call me a whimp but I couldn't take it. While I'm sure Johnny would have brought some heart to Jack in the movie, Benecio had none. I was left cold by his portrayal, which says much for his fearless acting, but doesn't make me like the character one bit more. My husband loved it.

The singing, I loved your summary. JD has these insecurities that I so relate to: heights, dancing, singing. Add to those commonalities the similarities in socioeconomic and geographical (read: hillbilly) backgrounds, and everything he's done with what he's been given despite all odds against him, and I can't help but admire the guy on some personal level. My life is so uncontrollably mundane and dull, I am actually proud of him for being willing to challenge himself. I've always wondered how much of his singing fears were related to ability. How much can a vocal coach do with some rough basic talent? I can't wait to find out.

ah, thanks for the explanation!

about johnny's singing, i remember reading that he did backup singing for some of his bands (is that the right term? for some reason i'm drawing a blank here). but if he in fact had to do an audition for sondheim, i can't imagine him, gay though he may be, letting that influence his decision to give his stamp of approval to johnny. if he thought he wasn't good enough, he might have offered some private tutoring :D but i think he must have found him to be up for it, as it were...
Re: Daily News - August 2006
Post by madscntst on Aug 18, 2006, 12:21pm

Cass, there was a teen magazine I had that said for The Kids that Johnny played lead guitar and sang background vocals. And other articles, some recent, including the ones this past week about Sweeney and Sondheim, seem to assume he sang in bands. But what I'm saying is that the actual KIDS, and the people who recall the music scene at the time, say he "really wasn't a singer", and he might've been doing some vocals when they were *all* singing (and that video clip from Bravo would support that), but that he didn't actually do much singing. Joey Malone says that he did most of the vocals that Bruce Witkin (the lead vocalist) didn't do, and that seems to be supported by the song intro to Time Is The Key, in which Joey is introduced as doing the lead vocals, and corroboration from several folks including Joey that he was the 2nd vocal on Backstage Girl. A teen mag may not be that careful with the research and may just be trying to spin a cool story. There was no vocalist for Johnny's first band, Flame, which was said to have sucked, anyway, and there is no evidence that Johnny ever did any singing for Rock City Angels. For P, who knows- we do see that timid, reluctant man at the mic on People Who Died, but without having any other live performances, we don't know how common it was for him to step up to the microphone. He's not credited for vocals on the album. So the point is, I think the assumption that Johnny had a lot of credentials singing in rock bands is exaggerated. Don't get me wrong- if there is documentation of him singing in these bands, I would LOVE to get a listen! But it just sounds as if his vocal participation was kind of minimal.

In general, a lot of articles and bios seem to be a little inaccurate about Johnny's early music days. Some say he formed The Kids, but The Kids were in existence before Johnny joined them. Some say The Kids moved to LA and became the Rock City Angels, when in reality they were two completely separate groups, both of which just happened to have moved from FL to CA. They also sometimes say Johnny formed the Rock City Angels, and their members beg to differ. This is kinda why I've delved into this stuff- I like trying to tease out the real story! [image]

well actually, cathy, what i read was more or less the same. saying he sang background vocals means just that. sometimes they don't get used much at all. realizing that he was uncomfortable getting up in front of an audience and singing makes me realize how much of a personal risk this is for him, so bravo for that! i wonder if his next project will be a dance movie :D

oh, i really came here to post some box office news. this weekend, dmc is expected to be the number one int'l movie for the 7th week in a row, tying a record set by--and here's the really cool part--POTC!!!

Well, I guess it's a semantics issue, and maybe my definition of "background vocals" is a little too strict ;D I think of it as someone who was more consistently known for doing harmonies, as it sounds like Joey was. My main reason for bringing it up was that I was trying to get a handle with those FL folks as to how Johnny's singing voice sounded, and nobody really had an answer. At any rate, I think we agree that Sweeney Todd is gonna be a whole nother ballgame!

Oh boy. 8-)

... is there a stabbed in the heart smilie? Oh well; Sandy and Laura, you've won me over about ST with talk of his voice and him taking a wild chance. I'm onboard. Rum Diary is a more personal thing; I think it'll take some time and focus to get that one started right - I have a feeling he'd carry a weight of responsibility with that one more than with ST.

Well, there was also the longer tune, "I know a boy whose name is Arnie, he's about to turn eighteen and we'll have a big party"... that was actually the one I thought of. Actually, I think his brief singing in POTC was really good, even if he was clowning. I'm not a music professional, but to me, the voice had a perfectly fine quality and was definitely on key.
Re: Daily News - August 2006

If I may add my 2 cents ;D, someone mentioned the other day that Rex Harrison wasn't a singer but did fine in "My Fair Lady" as a sing/talk style. We know that Johnny can sing some as in POTC and GG, so while he may not be a Broadway type, he will probably be able to carry off the part of ST because he was in tune as said before. Also he must be better than some are giving him credit for if Mr. S approved him for the part, assuming the story was true that he would have to "try out" for the part, vocally wise. The point is , do we really know just how well Johnny can sing. He may be more talented than we are aware of in this aspect. :) Maybe Van has been giving him lessons. ;)

I am very excited about ST! I love theatre and to have Johnny perform in one of the best roles by one of the best songwriters is just FABULOUS! I think JOhnny will be just fine in ST. Yes it's a singing role (I'm sure there's vocal coaches working on him right now) but he can also portray the macabre nature of the character as fully as it needs to be. I can definitely see him taking on this role and just jumping in head first. He seems to jump into projects that way. Damn the fear, do it anyway. Right?!

Anyway, if his speaking voice is any indication of what his singing voice might be like......get the drool buckets ready now! We may instantaneously combust upon hearing him sing with that smooth, rich, deep tone...........think of it!

And yes, Sondheim is a broadway musical god and I bow to his greatness!

Someone on Gold Derby posted a brief history of Johnny's band days, and concluded it by saying "Basically, if not for Cage, he'd probably be a singer". Of course, someone pointed out that being in a couple of bands made him a musician, but not necessarily a vocalist, which is indeed true.

I don't know if there's any truth to the story about Sondheim demanding a test from Johnny, but his approval of this venture tells me he thinks Johnny has something to bring to the role.

I for one am really happy about the Sweeney Todd project, I'm sure Johnny wouldn't have taken on the role if he didn't think he could pull it off. With all the anti-blockbuster criticism lately it proves that he's still more than happy to take on something completely different.

Of course the fact that it means we get two films out next year has absolutely nothing to do with it.

I was think about this Sweeney Todd thing last night and although I'm very excited to hear Johnny sing (cuz anything he does with that voice is gonna melt my socks off!), and I do admire his boldness in trying something new, I couldn't quite put my finger on why I'm a bit disappointed that this is his next project.

Then it occurred to me, I'm thinking how easily it could turn into another way over the top exaggerated character for Johnny. He does them very well, and they're always fun to watch, but we just had 2 Jacks, WW and Sands (and you all know how much I love Sands) plus we have Raoul Duke (I know, I love him too!), Ed Wood and even Ichabod Crane was a bit of a caricature.

Don't get me wrong, some of those are my favorite characters and movies, I think I'm just ready for some of his more subtle and intricate performances. Even the Earl was over the top, though he certainly gave us marvelous glimpses of nuance, but it just left me wanting more. I was hoping for Shantaram or the Rum Diary, just so we could see a more complex and realistic performance. I'm thinking of Donnie Brasco, Gilbert, William Blake and Axel or even Aberline and JM Barrie.

He really seems to fluctuate between the two extremes
I think I was just hoping, after 2 Jack, a Willy and an Earl to get something quieter. He does the quiet moments so well. I don't want people to forget that.

Re: Daily News - August 2006

I guess I did kind of think of the Earl as a "quiet" performance. Maybe we're thinking of 2 different definitions for "quiet", Laura. I loved the lack of make up, the natural lighting. And even tho he's not using his own manner of speaking I can still hear Johnny through the character.
I'm excited about ST, but I do have to admit I'm a bit disappointed its not gonna be RD. But I'll take whatever bone he throws us! [image]

That reminds me, did anyone catch Johnny speaking to Dunmore (i think) in WW's voice while dressed as the Earl! :D in TL documentary
Dunmore says something about Johnny always being late and he says "Depp? Yeah, well, he's like that" :D

I'm still a novice to ST from listening to the CD several times, and I'm looking forward to the DVD I'm getting to get a better feel for how the story looks. But my impression so far is that the character of Sweeney Todd is not as one-dimensional as it may seem in hearing that he's a demon barber who goes around slashing people's throats. If anything, the Mrs. Lovett character is the one that seems to be a caricature. He's got humor, and he's got deep sadness. This movie could be a magnificent failure, but I am thrilled by the possibilities.

Being married to a one time professional singer and huge Sondheim fan, I was taken to see Sweeney Todd in 1994. Of all the modern musicals I enjoyed this one the most because of its beautiful and, for Sondheim, pretty accessable music, but mostly for its great storyline and dramatic opportunities. Maybe one has to be an actor more than a singer to pull this one off. Having said that, it still IS Sondheim music which means very demanding to the performer and very close to opera in this case.
Dramatically ST is right up Burton's alley and I can see Depp do wonderful things with the Todd persona; I don't know about the musical part though but Depp's surprised us all before. It's scary though. ???

Here's a review of Rogue's Gallery, in the Detroit Free Press:

August 20, 2006

PIRATE MUSIC
Various artists -- "Rogue's Gallery" (Anti) ***
Dreamed up by director Gore Verbinski and actor Johnny Depp while working on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," this sprawling, two-disc, 43-song excursion includes new interpretations of a bunch of almost-forgotten pirate ballads by a mostly stellar, if at times unlikely, crew that includes Bono, Sting, Bryan Ferry, Lucinda Williams, Nick Cave and Lou Reed.
Helming "Rogue's Gallery" is the masterful producer Hal Willner, who previously put together albums that paid tribute to jazz geniuses Thelonious Monk and Charles Mingus, composer Kurt Weill and others. He does an admirable job here of assembling and recording this full-spectrum talent pool, although the tremendous number of these seaworthy songs may send a few listeners running for some Dramamine.
Leaving loved ones, the specter of death, hard work and hard drinking are key subject matters handled particularly well by Bono on "A Dying Sailor to His Shipmates," Martin Carthy on "Hog-Eye Man" and Nick Cave on "Fire Down Below," with many others also making a strong showing.
The utterly inspired pairing of Roxy Music's Bryan Ferry with chamber pop singer Antony on the rousing "Lowlands Low" is a peak achievement, as is ex-Wall of Voodoo Stan Ridgway's rum-soaked reading of "Hanging Johnny" and Akron/Family's touching take on "One Spring Morning."
The motley crew of "Rogue's Gallery" also includes unlikely contributions from magician Ricky Jay, actor John C. Reilly and gonzo artist Ralph Steadman, none essential. But there is much on this unique compilation to intrigue even the most ardent landlubber. In stores Tuesday.

In other news, Johnny came in 2nd (behind Jack Black) in a poll of who you'd like to have for your best mate [image]
But look who they decide to focus the article on-- the anti-Depp ::)

Tom is beaten in popularity contest
8.07, Sun Aug 20 2006

Tom Cruise has come last in a poll to find the celebrity people would most like to have as their best mate.

The actor is less popular than the likes of Jack Nicholson and Colin Farrell.

King Kong star Jack Black topped the survey, with Johnny Depp second, and Will Smith third.

Orlando Bloom, Mel Gibson and Jamie Foxx also polled more votes than Tom Cruise.

The celebrities people would like as best mates:

1. Jack Black 25% 2. Johnny Depp 22% 3. Will Smith 18% 4. Samuel L Jackson 7% 5. Orlando Bloom 6% = Mel Gibson 6% = Brad Pitt 6% 6. Jack Nicholson 5% 7. Colin Farrell 4% = Jamie Foxx 4% 8. Tom Cruise 3%

How did C***** even make the list? ??? And I thought the same about Mel, but then I realized that the survey may have been conducted before Mel's recent fol-der-ol's.

Pirates week seven: BVI blockbuster takes $25.5m

Mike Goodridge in Los Angeles 20 August 2006

In its seventh consecutive weekend on release, Buena Vista International (BVI)'s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest led the international box office with a $25.5m take from 51 territories on 6,222 screens.

The blockbuster has now taken $522.7m, the 12th biggest gross in history. Globally the film has reached $923.8m, marking it out as Disney's biggest ever release, having now overtaken Finding Nemo which finished its run at $866.9m. In worldwide figure terms, Pirates 2 is now sixth and should surpass Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace ($924.3m) and The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers ($926.3m) by Monday or Tuesday to reach number four.

The film held the top spot in Spain, taking $5.1m from 788 screens and bringing its total to $24.6m after ten days.

It took $4.1m from 711 sites in Japan after five weekends of release, bringing its total in the territory to $69.3m.

It took $3.5m from 1,383 screens in Germany where it remains number one for the fourth straight weekend. Its total is now $52.4m.

It took $1.9m from 471 sites in the UK in its seventh weekend, bringing its total to $89m.

That's a nice round number. ;D

I thought he was imitating John Malkovich.[image]

You're probably right. That makes more sense, I just thought he sounded a bit like Willy.

Hi everyone [image] Just re-upped here and read the last 6 pages. . .and gotta put my vote in for ST [image] I've been studying up on it a little and not so sure it would have to be a 'caricature' performance. But I agree with most of Laura's great post about his performances of late.

BTW I am totally and completely and utterly convinced Johnny CAN sing. Beautifully.

Found this tidbit hilarious! It's from an interview with Samuel L. Jackson in EW about his new movie Snakes on a Plane:

http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1228538_1_0_,00.html

Are you bracing for the critical reaction to this movie?

C'mon! Number One, Owen Gleiberman, Peter Travers, and all those motherf------s don't need to watch this movie. They need to send some 13-year-old kid with f---ing pimples that goes to the mall every Friday to watch movies to review this movie. We don't need those guys talking about this movie. Send some kid to review this. Send a kid to review even Pirates of the Caribbean. Critics don't NEED to talk about Pirates. They KNOW they won't like it. But movies are all about suspending that kind of disbelief and incredulity. Do you critics know how to do that? I would love to be a pirate. I used to go watch Errol Flynn and go, ''Man, I wish I had a sword and could get on a boat and put a knife in my teeth and swing from boat to boat and chop some people up and all that kind of s---.'' Critics can't even get to that kind of place. Instead, it's like: ''Once again Johnny Depp wastes his enormous talent...''—BULLS---. You know, Johnny's having a GREAT time. He DESERVES to have a great time, because sometimes he expends a lot of energy doing some serious s--- that doesn't make but $150,000. He deserves to have fun, too.... There comes a time when you just want to do some s--- and let it go.

Such a lovely, d-e-e-p voice after all those high-pitched, hyper-talking people (I don't know who they all are!) that came before him. Cute the way he tried to hide behind his surfboard, too.

Well, we may have discounted the rumor that Johnny participated as "Jack Shit" in the Rogue's Gallery Sea Chantey collection, but apparently not everyone has. Here is a review of the CD set from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:

Tuesday, August 22, 2006
New music this week

VARIOUS ARTISTS

Rogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys (Anti-Records)

Johnny Depp's collection of pirate songs could do for sea songs, chanteys and drinking ditties what the soundtrack for "O, Brother, Where Art Thou?" did for bluegrass and old-time music. Then again, maybe not. The motley collection of songs by such artists as Bono, Sting, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry, Richard Thompson and Depp (recording as Jack S**t) may not have broad appeal, but it's a fascinating collection of gritty, sometimes bawdy folk tunes and gentle ballads inspired by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." Northwest folkie Baby Gramps, the bewhiskered "hokum blues" with the gravelly Popeye voice, performs on two tracks, "Cape Cod Girls" and "Old Man of the Sea." Also featured is Grammy-winning Seattle guitarist Bill Frisell on the tune "Spanish Ladies." (Gene Stout)

GRADE: B

And no... I would not take this review's word for it- for all we know, they may have been reading the same rumors we have :D Most probably, "Jack Shit" really is Elvis Costello's backing band, and most probably, their names are the names that are listed in the liner notes. Still, it's a rather fascinating rumor ;)

The name might be Lauren instead, an individual by that name requested to meet him and attend the DMC premiere. There also were thoughts/reports that he gave some tickets to MAWF for the Teen Choice Awards. Man, what a classy, wonderful guy Johnny is! He totally has my respect! Good news Cathy, thanks! I figured it would be about that week in time for Xmas.

At least they're not releasing the "Collector's Edition" 8 months after the regular edition. ;)

DVDs almost always come out on Tuesday, so the 5th would appear to be the correct date.

Whoa!! Just got done suffering thru that 2 hr. plugfest to be rewarded by 5 minutes of BEEE-U-TI-FULL JOHNNY!!!! [image]

Couldn't tape it cuz I don't have cable and reception isn't great (YouTube is too much for my dial-up dinosaur :( :'( ) But, man, the reception for him was LOUD and LONG and the most by far for anyone on the show . . . naturally. He couldn't even talk tho he kept trying. I guess y'all can see that on YouTube :)

Such a lovely, d-e-e-p voice after all those high-pitched, hyper-talking people (I don't know who they all are!) that came before him. Cute the way he tried to hide behind his surfboard, too.

@ Laura: Is there something you're not telling us?? When Johnny accepted his first award he said, quite seriously:

"It's for my friend, Laura."

How intriguing. Who's Laura, I wonder? ???

At JDR, they are reporting that the person in question might be one of the Make A Wish Foundation children that he has become acquainted with. The name might be Lauren instead, an individual by that name requested to meet him and attend the DMC premiere. There also were thoughts/reports that he gave some tickets to MAWF for the Teen Choice Awards. Man, what a classy, wonderful guy Johnny is! He totally has my respect! [image] He ain't bad to look at either! ;) ;D

[image] How can I love this man anymore?

But I'm going to continue to think he said Laura....for the obvious reason. :)

Funny you mention that, because just yesterday I was browsing through the box office mojo's DVD release dates section, just on the off chance they had any DMC info, and also to take a look at what else was coming up. I forget what date MI3 is coming out, but they're kind of making a big deal (by putting a note in parentheses) that the release date is a Monday and therefore out of the ordinary. So, I don't know why MI3 is getting special treatment ::) Some dumb marketing gimmick, no doubt :D

Cathy, it is indeed a strange and very funny site – but I think the band is legitimate. They sound like they’d appeal to Johnny’s sense of humor and the ridiculous…and the couple reviews of their performances make them sound like they are really good. The only thing I’m surprised about on the site is that they don’t mention the Rogue’s Gallery cd. They are on many of the tracks recorded in LA and are credited as “music directors” for the first LA session. I think that might just mean they were the back-up band for the session but still, they get pretty prominent mention. Still, it makes you wonder!

here's some news, a ceremony honoring dmc for visual effects. no word in the article whether johnny or any of the cast will attend. i'm putting the whole article here because it also talks about a movie about robert f kennedy, who was a personal hero of mine. i didn't even know about this movie till i read the article.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"BOBBY" GETS ENSEMBLE ACTING HONORS FROM HOLLYWOOD FEST

Weinstein Company's "BOBBY," Disney's "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST," Disney/Pixar's "CARS," and 20th Century Fox's "X-MEN: THE LAST STAND" will be presented with awards at the 10th annual HOLLYWOOD AWARDS.

The 10th Annual Hollywood Film Festival, presented by STARZ, is proud to announce that this year's festival will honor the cast of "BOBBY" with the "Hollywood Ensemble Acting of the Year Award," Disney's "PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST" with the "Hollywood Visual Effects of the Year Award," Disney/Pixar's "CARS" with the "Hollywood Animation of the Year Award," and 20th Century Fox's "X-MEN: THE LAST STAND" with the "Hollywood Make-Up of the Year Award."

The awards will be bestowed upon the honorees as part of the Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony on Monday evening, October 23, at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The announcement was made by Carlos de Abreu, Founder and Executive Director of the Hollywood Film Festival. "Every year we are very proud to honor excellence in the art of filmmaking in all its disciplines, and this year's honorees are outstanding examples of that excellence," said Mr. de Abreu.

"BOBBY," written and directed by Emilio Estevez, revisits the night Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. With an incredible ensemble cast portraying fictionalized characters from a cross section of America, the film follows 22 individuals who are all at the hotel for different purposes but share the common thread of anticipating Kennedy's arrival at the primary election night party, which would change their lives forever. This historic night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country at the time, including racism, sexual inequality and class differences.

The film, a release by the Weinstein Company that will open in theaters on November 22, features Harry Belafonte, Joy Bryant, Nick Cannon, Emilio Estevez, Laurence Fishburne, Brian Geraghty, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, David Krumholtz, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, Lindsay Lohan, William H. Macy, Svetlana Metkina, Demi Moore, Freddy Rodriguez, Martin Sheen, Christian Slater, Sharon Stone, Jacob Vargas, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Elijah Wood.

"PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN'S CHEST" will be honored with the festival's "Hollywood Visual Effects of the Year Award." From Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films and directed by Gore Verbinski, this summer blockbuster enthralled audiences with its extraordinary and thrilling visual effects. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back in this sequel to "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" and he owes an unpaid debt -- his soul -- to Davy Jones (Bill Nighy) and his army of sea-phantoms. In dangers of their own, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) are also caught up in Jack's fight to save himself from eternal damnation.

"CARS," an animated feature from Walt Disney Pictures/Pixar Animation Studios, will receive the festival's "Hollywood Animation of the Year Award." Directed by John Lasseter and Joe Ranft, "CARS" is the story of Lightning McQueen, a hot-shot animated stock-car voiced by actor Owen Wilson. En route to a big race, the cocky McQueen gets lost and lands in Radiator Springs. There he finds the true meaning of friendship and family with the help of Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), Sally Carrera (Bonnie Hunt) and other members of the community.

"X-MEN: THE LAST STAND," from 20th Century Fox and Donners' Company, will be awarded the "Hollywood Make-Up of the Year Award." Brett Ratner directed the film. In "X-MEN: THE LAST STAND" a "cure" for mutants threatens to alter the course of history. For the first time, mutants have a choice: retain their uniqueness, though it isolates them, or give up their powers and become human. The opposing viewpoints of mutant leaders Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), who preaches tolerance, and Magneto (Ian McKellen), who believes in the survival of the fittest, are put to the ultimate test -- triggering the war to end all wars.

Other industry professionals who will be honored for their achievements at the Gala Awards Ceremony are Oscar-winning cinematographer Vilmos Zsigmond who will receive the "Hollywood Cinematographer of the Year Award," Academy Award-winning editor Joel Cox who will be honored with the "Hollywood Editor of the Year Award," Academy Award-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla who will get the "Hollywood Composer of the Year Award," two-time Oscar-winning production designer John Myhre who will receive the "Hollywood Production Designer of the Year Award," costume designer Penny Rose who will be honored with the "Hollywood Costume Designer of the Year Award," and casting director Francine Maisler who will be honored with the "Hollywood Casting Director of the Year Award."

The 2006 Annual Hollywood Film Festival will take place from October 17 to 23. The festival's screenings take place at ArcLight Theatres in Hollywood. Its Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony will be held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, Monday, October 23.

here's a cool tidbit i found from deadlinehollywooddaily. it's from last week but there was something at the end of the article i don't think anyone posted yet:

I'm told that, in addition to its $392.4 million U.S. box office gross, Disney's blockbuster Pirates of the Caribbean 2: Dead Man's Chest is No. 1 internationally for six straight weeks. The Johnny Depp starrer did $44 million this weekend bringing the overseas total to $463 million. So worldwide the total is a whopping $855 million -- making it the 11th highest grossing movie of all time. That's many spots higher than Sony's The Da Vinci Code which is logging $752 mil worldwide for 21st place. This weekend, Disney added one new territory, Spain, and it surged to the biggest opening of all time there stealing 75% of all ticket sales. (The all-time No. 1 is still Titanic with $1.8 billion.) Meanwhile, Depp is consitently leading Internet search lists for celebrities. So he'll end the summer as the biggest star in the world.

K-Fed Up with the Teen Choice Awards
A decade and a half away from my teenage years, I am not ashamed to say that I thoroughly enjoyed watching last night's Teen Choice Awards. And by "thoroughly enjoyed" I mean an evening spent engaging in adolescent-style criticisms and witticisms about the entire production, ably assisted by my equally juvenile husband.

Confession: As K-Fed performed I wished that Ludacris and Snoop Dogg would suddenly spring onto the stage, ninja style, and lock him in his piano. (AP)Still, some things about the show remain cryptic to my age-addled brain. No doubt there were parts of the production understood only by consumer culture drones between the ages of 13 - 19. Perhaps some teen, or the parent of a teen, can answer my lingering questions from last night's show:

1. Why was there a hot tub full of girls on the corner of the stage? I have to admit I only watched the last half hour of the show, but were they in that hot tub for the entire two-hour production? Did their skin float off by the end of the evening?

My Surmise:The massive entertainment-industrial complex wanted to reinforce the message that women have come a long way. They are no longer stereotypically barefoot and pregnant (unless you're a pop star from Louisiana). Indeed, they are bikini-clad and boiled.

2. What was wrong with Jessica Simpson? She came off as freakishly giddy -- whether feigning surprise over her baffling win for best movie breakout star ("Dukes of Hazzard" and I will not make a Proactiv joke here) or "comically" donning some grills to make a point about bling. She also apparently raided her sister's pre-surgery closet for her little girl Goth look.

My Surmise: She was hanging out backstage with Snoop Dogg and a little gin and juice.

3. How uncomfortable was Johnny Depp? When accepting the award for best actor, he sheepishly scratched his head while waiting for a venue full of teen girls to stop shrieking at him in lust. Then he mumbled out a hurried thanks and shuffled off the stage with his surfboard-sized award.

My Surmise: The notoriously reclusive Depp must've been conked on the head and spirited unconsious to the awards show by Disney execs. Oh, and girls, he's 43. Stick to Orlando Bloom and leave Depp to mom and Aunt Liz.

4. How much did Kevin Federline's performance bite? From his big surprise (that's him behind the piano. Snap!) to his out-of-breath rapping and embarassingly simple lyrics ("I'm in a whole other tax bracket." What, dependent?), K-Fed was by far the icing atop this cake of despair for America's youth.

My Surmise: No amount of marketing will make Mr. Spears a pop star. As noted by two perceptive friends, K-Fed reminded us of no one so much as an untalented version of Vanilla Ice. Yes, you heard me.

blossom linked to a nice new video in the multimedia forum. here's the blurb that went with it:

Depp and Bloom - Back in the Water
Posted Aug 23rd 2006 2:42PM by TMZ Staff

After cleaning up at the Teen Choice Awards, Captain Jack Sparrow and his band of pirates headed back to the Black Pearl after a summer hiatus from filming "Pirates of the Caribbean 3."

The cast of next year's sure-to-be box office hit are now back on the ship off the coast of Palos Verdes, Calif.

After filming wrapped for the day on Tuesday evening, Orlando Bloom made a quick escape by jumping in his car and heading out. While Johnny Depp, on the other hand, found time to say hi and take pictures with the dozens of fans waiting to see the actor through a chain link fence that borders the set.

It's pretty clear why Depp walked away with the two Choice Movie Actor awards on Sunday night in both the comedy and drama/action categories. On- and off the screen- Johnny seems to be everyone's favorite movie star.

a funny news story about ABC's decision to air POTC during the Emmy's broadcast:

[/b]
Take THAT, Emmys!
Posted Jul 25th 2006 12:46PM by TMZ Staff
Filed under: TV, Awards/Awards Shows

What do the two most famously-snubbed Emmy contenders -- "Lost" and "Desperate Housewives" -- have in common? They're both on ABC, of course. And apparently the net is so upset about those shows getting passed over (even though they scored more nods than any other broadcast network) that ABC is counter-programming the Emmy ceremony by airing "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl."

According to the Hollywood Reporter, ABC will air the first "Pirates" film on August 27, while NBC will be airing the Emmys at the same time. ABC and USA paid in excess of $20 million for the right to broadcast the film that spawned the biggest movie of 2006.

Conan O'Brien, who is hosting this year's telecast, joked about the move in an interview on Monday.

"Yeah, I'm actually feeling like this is an attack on me," O'Brien said. "And so I'd like to announce that we're going to counterprogram with the second 'Pirates of the Caribbean' movie. I've gotten Disney's permission to take my poor-quality bootleg and project it on a wall of the Shrine Auditorium sometime about mid-show. We're gonna wind up losing about 15 categories, but I feel like it's worth it."[/b]

So, that Philadelphia Soul football jersey that Bon Jovi arranged to get autographed and Johnny was one of the signers, went for $3,750 :o

I forgot to bookmark the non-Johnny-related auctions, so I don't know how this compares with how the others did, but.... wow. I hope the winner enjoys it!

So Johnny's going to be the biggest, most searched, most powerful, movie star in the world this year. That's so weird. Really really weird. It's like the whole world suddenly woke up and noticed him all at once. I didn't think he would get any "bigger" than he did with the first POTC, but he most definitely has. If ten years ago someone had told me that T** C***** was going to take a header and that Johnny would end up in his big "Star Power" place, I would have laughed. Now it's happening and it's such an odd feeling. I've been trying to put my finger on what it is that's giving me this queezy feeling and I think it may be the backlash that's bound to come eventually. I never understood why his movies didn't do very well and he wasn't more popular. Now he's huge, and I'm still confused... but, when the catty, cynical, sniping bastards start ripping him to shreds, I'll still be around.

I know what you mean, phigalilly. I think I understand your queasy feeling, too - it's like he's 'destined to be cold', right? And with the IMMENSITY of his popularity now, it seems like the backlash should be extra harsh.

But you know ... that's why I'm on the edge of my seat. I don't think there will be a huge backlash - maybe a wane in popularity, but I don't think he could do anything to really get people to tear him down. I think it's a really extraordinary thing Johnny's captivated people this way; unlike anything/anyone else - I don't think he'll follow the pattern quite so violently. I hope. [image] And if he is broken down somehow, yes, I'll be right there anyway. 8-)

"it seems like the backlash should be extra harsh."

Yep, I think that is my fear exactly. I think he'd probably find it funny if it happens, but yes, I do have this image of him reaching the very top of the highest hill on a reeeeally steep roller coaster...and.....whoosh.

I think this creeping dread I've had started when a friend who got into Capt. Jack wanted to see some of his other movies. I showed her some of my favorites and her reaction was something like, "Now I remember why I never liked him." <smack>

I hope you're right, Kristen. :)

I don't really worry too much about that. The Libertine proved that Johnny can make a film that is not successful at the box office or with the critics, and yet come back and be the star of what will surely be the 3rd highest grossing film in history. The difference between him and T** C***** is that C***** is a movie star, while Johnny is an actor. He can be just as comfortable at the bottom as at the top as long as he can still be challenged. It's interesting to me that on other non-Depp forums such as OscarWatch, IMDB, and Rotten Tomatoes, you rarely find someone who does not regard him as one of the best, if not the best, actor of his generation, but the ones who don't appreciate his talent seem to go to such amazing lengths to argue their position, as if they don't really believe in their own opinion.

I think this is the crux of it. Dragging someone down is only fun if it hurts them. You really don't hear too many movie stars say "If it all goes away tomorrow, I had a few good years, and I can always go back to pumping gas." (Not that he'd have to :D) But this modesty and perspective will always be to his advantage, because I think most people like someone at the top when they don't get all bent out of shape about it.

It's funny that Lynn mentions IMDB, because I do hear some dissing going on sometimes ("Oh, I'm so sick of him!")... but then when people challenge them on it, it's revealed that they really don't find any fault with Johnny himself, or with his acting, but they're sick of the fangirls (us [image] ) So even if people get tired of the attention he's getting, and yeah, I think they might, I see his decline as more of a wane, or people jumping on some other bandwagon to catch the Next Big Thing. I honestly don't think he'll crash. I hope not!

('Course, it'd make it a lot easier for me... could you imagine being able to go to all his premieres or stand behind a chain link fence on a movie set, and there being like 2 other people there waiting to see him? Sounds like heaven to me [image] )

funny, at the premiere i went to i had this idea there might be like 20 people there for him. and i was afraid most of them would be yelling nasty things at him. that's what people on the internet would have you believe, anyway. i think johnny has such a hard-core fanbase that anything that happens from here on will not affect it. and kids love him and will grow up being little depp fans, so i think his future is secure even if he manages to piss off everyone else :)

Do you really think so, Cass? I kind of think that with his children getting old enough to be aware of just how famous their father is, any media backlash with all the foulness it entails is going to hurt him a lot more, as his kids will know anout it and he won't be able to protect them from reading what is written about him.

But so right about expect a backlash. Our press here are absolute reptiles and like nothing more that to see the downfall of someone with fame, money, talent, looks.... we see it every day (and no, I don't just mean Pete, there's plenty of others)

With POTC 3 coming out so soon on the heels of the second movie, the peak of his stardom hasn't been reached yet. I think it's safe to say that he's the biggest movie star in the world right now, numero uno, and one of the most famous faces on this planet, so what is going to happen next year will be truly phenomenal....The reaction to him at the Teen Choice Awards says volumes. It's hysteria!

I don't necessarily see a 'backlash' happening per se, unless he acts 'weird' like jump up and down on Oprah's sofa, have a baby that no one has seen yet, and issue very strange press statements ;).....he's just too respected as an actor. But I'm sure his future films will not have the same box office as the "POTC" movies and things will 'cool off' around him, as it did around Leo DeCaprio after "Titanic". And I suppose that would suit Johnny just fine.

He could always take a filming hiatus of a year or two, and just chill in France, I suppose.

I wanted to bring up again what Heather said because it's exactly how i feel . HAPPY + SELFISH .
As much as I'm thrilled about his success and the whole hoopla surrounding POTC triolgy , i still greatly fear what you guys have been calling a " backlash" . So it was a hugh comfort to read what Cassy , Cathy , Kristen , Lynn , Arnelle , Emr had to say . Thanks ~!v
In my humble opinion i think the worst backlash that could happen is the intreset in him would cool down a tiny bit , that's all . After all he's not a club hubbing , spouse swapping , brainless celeb so there's not much to dig at him . He might face some or lots of envy from his less talented , less successfull peers but it's fine .
Also I think it's interesting what Katie said about him not having reached the peak of his sucess and fame yet ! . LOVE IT ! (btw welcome Katie ! sorry it's late :-[ ).

Dittos to all that was said above! You have all made valid and well said points that I won't rehash. I just want to say that while he will cool down as a "fad" and that is what he is to some, his die hard fans will always be there. He has the respect of many fine actors/directors/producers/writers, that his "star" is really that of one of the type of what I would call "Old Hollywood", like Bogart, Gable, Grant, etc. I think he will always be around and respected. He would have to go totally insane to screw that up and I don't see that happening. Also, he is really just to nice a guy to pull stunts like T**C***** , the Bradgalinas or Mel Gibson. He is just not a publicity hog. Good man, fine actor. I'm sticking with him for good. [image] :)

From ExpressIndia.com, this is kind of an odd time to bring up Shantaram... I wish they had said something about the timing of the filming...

Chunky Pandey to star with Johnny Depp

IndiaFM News Bureau
Posted online: Saturday, August 26, 2006 at 0943 hours IST

Mumbai, August 26: Chunky Pandey has confirmed that he is a part of the Hollywood film Shantaram based on the book written by Gregory David Roberts. Chunky plays the role of a Bollywood actor in the film. This will probably be Chunky’s first Hollywood film in his career.

Shantaram is the story of an Australian guy sentenced to 19 years of prison who escapes to Mumbai, where he is renamed as Shantaram.

He then begins his criminal career again connecting with the Mumbai underworld. The film is a big venture made under the banner of Warner Bros.

The film stars Johnny Depp in the lead role of Shantaram. The film also stars Emily Watson.

One article (but it was a couple of months ago; just after Peter Weir bowed out) said they'd still be ready to start filming Shantaram in Spring of '07. Now with Sweeney Todd filming first, I guess that'd have to be late spring, at the earliest, and that's if they line up a new director. However, someone (MQ?) had mentioned that they might not want to be filming in India in the middle of the summer, because of the heat. So, would they wait until fall/winter, even if they're ready? I guess we'll see!

it's definitely going to reach 1 billion worldwide and pass everything but titanic and rotk. whether it can pass rotk too all depends. it's not out of the question. but for it to be the #3 movie of all time (right now it's #4) is simply amazing, isn't it? plus, if it stays on top this weekend like the analysts expect it to do, it'll break the record for weeks at #1, a record previously held by potc.

For what it's worth, and probably to the relief of some folks :D I Am Legend has been taken down from Johnny's IMDB filmography page (it had been listed there for a couple of months as "rumored"). The movie is still listed and shows Will Smith as the star.

I myself was sort of up for the possibility, only because pairing Johnny and Will Smith seemed so unlikely that it was almost intriguing. And also I'd love for Johnny to play a vampire/zombie [image] However, I'm just as happy to see this movie gone from the rumor mill- he's got enough stuff on his plate right now! [image]

finally! int'l numbers are in and here they are (no further details available right now):

8th weekend overseas: 17.8m$ (new record; #1 for 8 weeks now!)
Total overseas: 564.7m$
Worldwide: 972.3m$!!!!!!!!!

those exclamation marks were not put in by me, btw. people over at boxofficemojo are really getting excited about this. on their home page there is a poll about who is the most bankable star, johnny, T** C*****, tom hanks, will smith, or jim carrey. johnny is winning the poll handily! i don't necessarily agree with it because at any given moment johnny is just as likely to make another libertine as he is a blockbuster. but it's a reflection on his wide-spread popularity.

from Variety:

The buccaneers are nearly billionaires.

"Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" scored its eighth straight weekend victory at the foreign box office with $17.8 million at 7,387 playdates, lifting its international cume to $564.7 million and the worldwide take to $972.3 million.

The sequel is within a day or two of passing "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (at $976.5 million) as the third highest worldwide grosser of all time. And it could hit the $1 billion mark by the end of next weekend, joining "Titanic" ($1.83 billion) and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" ($1.13 billion) as the only pics with 10-figure worldwide cumes.

Thanks to respectable holdovers plus a record-setting Greek launch, BVI's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest" took in nearly as much as the combined grosses of the next two pics, UIP's "Miami Vice" and BVI's "Cars."

"Dead Man's Chest" has kept overall late-summer foreign biz humming, finishing well above leading pics in the same frame last year ("The Island" with $9.7 million) and 2004 ("The Village" with $10.2 million).

"Chest" took its top grosses from France with $3.2 million at 750, down 40% in its sixth frame, and from Greece with an all-time best opening of $2.6 million at 195, 25% ahead of previous territorial record-holder, "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King."

"Chest" also saw solid grosses from its fifth German frame with $2.3 million at 680, its sixth Japanese weekend with $2.2 million at 585, its third Spanish sesh with $2.1 million at 788 and its eighth U.K. weekend with $1.1 million at 450, down 33% and lifting the Brit cume to $91.5 million. The sequel also managed to generate the top launch of 2006 in war-torn Lebanon with $100,000 at 65 engagements.

The eight straight victories by "Chest" represent the longest winning streak of this century, topping the seven consecutive frames won by "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl," which grossed $653 million worldwide in 2003. Its final major foreign opening comes Sept. 15 in Italy.

Thanks Kazren for all the news and the video! [image] [image] Hope you feel better soon! :) Also thanks Cassady and Cathy for all your news! [image] [image] Great earnings for DMC, guess I'll add some to that next week when I see it again. Cathy, I agree about the I, Legend news, I would have loved to see him play a vampire but he really does have to much going on right now. Maybe some future date and I do wish he would pair up with Robert R. for a Sands sequel/prequel. Oh, well we better just get ready for and used to ST. I'll take what I can get. [image] :)

And the idea of another movie as Agent Sands is quite appealing, too. ;)

Just a reminder: Baby Gramps, one of the singers on Johnny's Rogue's Gallery album, is on David Letterman tonight. He'll be singing a song from the album. Hopefully we'll get a good Johnny mention. I love that Letterman is supporting Johnny in this way. He's a real fan!

Ah well, Variety goofed, DMC's total is at $962 million not $972. Still it will soon be knocking HP The Scorcerer's Stone out of 3rd place in the all time WorldWide totals.

Also, in Canada, according to Manny, it is only the movie here to cross $40 million since ROTK. It stands at 7th in Canada's all time list. Also DMC only fell 19% this past week!!! But it's no longer playing in my little town :'(

Yeah, I noticed it's not playing at as many theaters now. Even in Houston, it's not playing at too many places... though I did manage to go see it again yesterday.

I hope it's still playing at Downtown Disney in Disneyland next week, 'cause I'll have to see it there when I'm in CA. It's still there as of now.

I would think they'd keep it playing there as long as possible, so you should be ok. Maybe they'll add a few more theatres for the long weekend too. Esp. if the newer films aren't doing so great. One can only hope. If not, as Cass said, the DVD is soon out.

Look what you all can get up to in 2 weeks! Putting my belated 2 cents into what I can remember of the last 27 pages, I think a key factor in maintaining respect for any actor is to watch others' films as much as possible also, so as not to get tired. And I don't think he's sold out or gotten boring. Hang on for a year or so until something else comes out and we'll be astonished all over again. In my opinion, in 20 years of working in film, he's never done 2 things quite the same - why would he be starting now? I'm just waiting, and then I'll see.

Although the musical does sound sort of odd. I shouldn't be surprised, by now.
Salut!

I was watching the Baby Gramps performance last night, and the network interrupted it to offer live coverage of the demolition of the old Wilson Bridge in DC. So I missed the end. But from what I saw, Baby Gramps looked disturbingly like Davy Jones :D And maybe a little of Cousin Itt/"Oompa-Loompa who ate the hair toffee". I find the sound intriguing, but I think I prefer it in small doses :)

How Johnny Depp became the Pirated copy
by KATIE HAMPSONLast updated at 16:51pm on 25th August 2006

Johnny Depp-elgangers: Can you spot the real Johnny Depp? Or has he already walked the plank?

When Johnny Depp took to the seas and filmed a scene for the third Pirates of the Caribbean film, it wasn't simply a case of seeing double.

For there was not one, but five lookalikes on board a boat leaving a Californian beach.

And as the epitome of a Hollywood heartthrob, the pulses of female fans worldwide must be racing at the very thought of so many Captain Jack Sparrows.

Each of the doubles sported the familiar long tresses and headscarves as they piled into a boat with cast and crew on a beach in California.

The third Pirates of the Caribbean, due to hit American cinemas in May next year, will see Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, and Elizabeth Swann, played by Keira Knightly, sail off the edge of the map for one last battle.

Walt Disney Pictures have not yet named the final part of the trilogy, but speculation is rife as to what it could be.

The Internet Movie Database has mentioned World's End, At World's End and Unchartered Waters as possibilities.

TV and movie industry newsletter Cynopsis also claimed Rolling Stones legend Keith Richards could be making an appearance as Jack Sparrow's father.

The first two movies were box office smashes - with Dead Man's Chest raking in £488.3million worldwide so far.

The pic wasn't saveable, but... [image]

I kinda had a feeling that one on the right wasn't Johnny, though he looked the closest. Maggy, do you know which day the middle pix (from WENN) were taken? It looks like a different boat than the last pic. On IMDB, a few folks have been posting their own personal pix of The Black Pearl and such from the past week or so- it seems that the locals have had ample opportunities to see the boat ship both near land and further out in the water. Some of them were taken on Sat. and Sun., though it didn't sound like they were doing any filming those days. What fun- I wish I was out that way and could take a peek :D

Per WENN, they were taken on the 24th. The WENN tag refers to them as:
Johnny Depp's stunt doubles on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean 3
Los Angeles, California - 24.08.06

It's, of course, the one day they didn't get pics of Johnny in his separate boat. We have those for the 23rd and 25th, not the 24th.

I don't think there's any spoiler. At a guess, multiple stand-ins/body doubles are needed when they are laying out shoots, checking lighting, doing long-range shots and/or stunts. Different people do different things and union rules require frequent breaks. Johnny wouldn't come out until all the preparatory work had been done. As someone in the know posted elsewhere, it's cheaper to have lots of stand-ins/doubles who work for relatively low wages than delay shot preparations to accommodate one or two people's schedule. Time is worth more than a few persons' labor in something like this. It sounds like they want to get this piece wrapped up quickly, hence five CJS's plus Johnny!

i re-read an old article recently where the writer talked about walking into a trailer full of johnnies. imagine that! anyway, like maggy said, i think it's common to have multiple body doubles for one movie.

Late posting in on this, but the Karr thing, when I read his quote, actually made my flesh crawl. How horrid for Johnny, to have this freak of nature think Johnny was ANYTHING like him. I guess the consolation is that what he was comparing were roles and not our real, dear Johnny. I still get the heebie-jeebies thinking about it tho.
For the record, I think WW treated the kids properly. If they were nasty little beasties, that is how he treated them.
Okay...done now. Thanks for tuning in.
Back to the Invasion of the CJS doubles....

file this under Weird and Creepy. you know how everybody wants johnny to play them in their biopic? well, mark karr, the guy who confessed to killing jonbenet ramsey, was asked who he wanted to play him in his inevitable biopic (before they found out he wasn't the right guy):

"I already know the actor I want to play my part...Johnny Depp...He reminds me so much of me. And he looks like me. And he would play the part perfectly. very similar to my personality except for the fact that Willy Wonka did not know how to treat children, he had no knowledge of how to be around children. But the other thing is that I've seen him in films over and over. And he was in a very good film called The Secret Window and he played this writer. It's his look, it's his age, it's the fact that he's an attractive man and he fits my part perfectly."

Ugh! I don't f***ing think so, buddy!!!

That dude needs some serious help.
You said it! I wish they could lock that creep up somewhere before he does actually do some physical harm to someone! Love the birdshot emoticon!

That's just wrong, how can someone who confessed to killing a child compare himself to Johnny who has always shown such care for them, and not just his, but kids that go to his premieres and those of crew members on set (IE that photo from Dead man, and the quote from Darlene Cates...) Makes me sick to hear that this man is comparing himself to Johnny...

'Cause Friday I'm heading to the California Speedway for the weekend and then Monday I'm heading to Disneyland.

What's scary is that this man is a truely a nutjob and he is actually comparing hisself to Johnny. I mean I was seriously disturbed by this. I mean seriously made me want to throw up. I mean that's just disgusting and disturbing. I don't even know what to say to this.
Dad and I were talking about this yesterday and he was like "there is no way in hell Johnny Depp would ever play someone so sick and sadistic"

I was made pretty speechless by the things he said!

I believe they've gone back to Disney's Burbank studios.

dharmabum on the Zone reported seeing the Pearl off the coast of San Pedro yesterday and today. She said it looked like they might have been shooting stuff where the principals weren't needed. That sounds like a second unit shoot with the main folks back in Burbank. Karen, on JDR, had a report to that effect (click here for JDR report) and also that Gore was meeting with some of the extras (maybe Keef's crew? can't remember) (click here for JDR report on Gore meeting with Keith's henchmen). Maybe Johnny's getting some well-deserved time off.

I'm so happy for those fans and for Johnny! He's expressed before how much he genuinely wishes he could thank each and every fan/supporter and talk to them individually - I think he really enjoys these times, and I love him for it. [image]

... and at the rate these films are going, i think he will get the chance to greet every one of them. [image] :P
