Roger Ebert gave the film 3 stars. Here is his excellent review -- important to realize that this movie WAS well regarded, as was Depp's performance, even if it didn't find its audience at the time. Which I think was more of function of marketing than anything else.

Right, don't get me wrong about that Becky, i love this Film and how they made it. I think the media destroyed it, because for them it seemed so filthy. Which is a shame, i still think until today,its Johnnys best Performance ever.
