Aww, people just complain about everything on the Internet. "This isn't original! This is too weird! He's a sell-out! He's a weirdo!" I mean, if the public was really tired of Pirates, OST wouldn't have grossed over a billion dollars.
That said, because I wasn't totally thrilled with OST, I'm not totally thrilled with the prospect of a Pirates 5. I secretly wish Prince of Persia would've taken off so Disney/Bruckheimer could've focused on a project like that for a while. I'm not tired of Pirates, I'm just...tired of Pirates. I guess the problem is that the "fresh direction" Rob Marshall was supposed to bring to the franchise was more sour than anything. If and when a Pirates 5 happens, I wish they'd get a new director, get the old production designer back, ditch Penelope Cruz, craft some new characters, and take their time getting the budget together.
But I do love Pirates. And I do love Captain Jack. And I prefer Pirates to Johnny's more "serious" roles. (I'd say all of his non-Tim "serious" films have been more or less a disappointment to me except Finding Neverland.) That doesn't mean I don't want him to do other things. As long as Johnny's out there doing his stuff, I'll be happy.

I guess it's hard to find a good Pirate story teller out there these days.
IF he decides to go ahead with #5, I want to see the old Jack Sparrow back. More one off funny comments, a bit more swagger to his bootie, etc... Perhaps it's best to go back and watch #1,2,3 for that, because I"m not sure he can get that kind of 'spunk' back as the story(stories) deepen/s.
I agree. In most cases, you expect the character to mature as time goes on, but not Jack (at least on some level). Expectations are high with each film, so how do you top the very first performance which just so happened to be complete and utter magic? Not that easy, even for the most talented actor.
Thanks dawg. I could be remembering this wrong, but wasn't there a script submitted for POTC5 that was rejected? That's a little different than having "thought about it." Though maybe Marshall is just trying to be nice. (Pardon my snarkiness, but I don't care for Terry Rossio and kinda wish they'd bring in a new writer(s) if they absolutely have to have a POTC5. And to be honest, I'm not chomping at the bit for a POTC5, even though I loved Johnny and Penelope's chemistry together.

He told Absolute Radio: "You know, I've got the costume, and I'm waiting for the heads up... I don't know if it'll be next year that we shoot it or whatever, but as I say, you know, I got the costume and the beard and the shirt, and I'll wait for a call from Johnny."
