I think I've heard Johnny speak so much that I don't even hear any kind of accent anymore
I agree, I don't think he sounds any different today than he did a couple years ago. His voice has gotten deeper, (probably from the smoking) but no accent. But, I quoted this because people at work know I am such a fan of Johnny's and several people have asked me lately "what's up with his accent?" So I guess people do hear "something". Don't know. Just thought I would throw that out there.
The CultFilmFreak review was dead-on pretty acurate to me. I'm a huge HST and of course Johnny fan, but from the beginning when I heard Johnny dug up a director who hadn't worked in 17 years, (albeit a favorite of his) I was a little worried about this film. I even gave the director/sreenwriter benefit of doubt, and went to see the movie with a positive attitude, and read no reviews and limited my views of previews. It's never easy to write a screenplay from a book, but still, the review from CFF in my opinion is very acurate. But having said that, I did not dislike the film, and I enjoyed it, and Johnny was so acurate doing Hunter. No matter what the reviews say, I'm sure Johnny is satisfied he got the film made. And so am I!

And his Ichabod Crane face, too, Amp! The scene where he's cowering in fear in front of the voodoo priestess, reminds me exactly of when Ichabod Crane freaked out over seeing that spider in his bedroom. I was waiting to see if he'd faint in TRD after she blew that frog out of her mouth and he almost s**t his pants!
This was posted on the Zone that was posted on Hollywood Elsewhere.... food for thought:
The Rum Diary had been looking for a home for more than a decade before GK took it on. They did so on condition that Depp do The Tourist first. Same reason why GK is releasing Land of Blood and Honey, directed by one Angelina Jolie.
We always kind of wondered what the deal was with Tourist and GK and Rum Diary. It's interesting to think that's also why Angelina got involved.

Johnny says he doesn't care that the film isn't doing gangbusters at the box office. He's happy with the film, he knows HST would be proud, and he says he never set out to make this movie with a huge box office take in mind.

This is a 2:34 minute video that combines parts of Johnny being interviewed for The Rum Diary, parts of the trailer, and most interesting - some behind the scenes video footage during filming. You'll see "Hunter's chair" that Johnny had set up on set every day, and in another scene, Johnny dipping his fingers in the glass of Chivas Regal and dabbing it behind his ears and on the back of his neck. It also shows how they did the scene in the little car where they're going down the steps.
