Gee, such an amazingly kind human being. I guess his mom did raise him well. I always remember that story of when Johnny's sister had her first child and Johnny was so worried about the baby at night, he slept next to his crib on the floor. He is tender about things, and it shows up with kids and babies and dogs. I am sure he still has a temper and gets angry, throws things and curses, and I feel he is filled with passionate emotion and not particularly needful of the center stage. He is humble. Not a push-over but not intent on pushing his career over anything else. Always the friends.
I do think there are men like Johnny. I have this cousin who reminds me so much of him -- his winks, teasing, smiles, he goes out of his way to help others, loves his wife, children and grandchild. Another tender man who's had to deal with hard things but his soul is still pure. It's funny, I hadn't seen him in years and I saw him this summer it clicked. At least half of my attraction for Johnny comes out of my feelings for my cousin.
It's funny, I was watching the SAGs last night, and there were a couple of remarks from the host Kristen Bell that struck me. I'm not sure if they happened at the same time, but at one point she was saying she shouldn't have been nervous about hosting, because no matter what she said, everyone in the audience would only be thinking about themselves and wondering if they were going to win, and they wouldn't even be listening to her. (And I thought, Johnny would be listening, and maybe also hoping he didn't win )
And then similarly, she was listing a list of qualities she had, and ended with, "I'm Kristen Bell, and I'm a narcissist! Just kidding, I'm an actor." I nearly fell off my chair laughing, because of all the talk about you-know-who's narcissism, and I realized that most actors have these traits. But Johnny is so different than the norm-- the only time I can think of that he wants attention is every now and then, when he's in a hammy mood, and he starts doing things like playing with the microphone (remember that time he kept passing it back and forth with Dakota Johnson? But even then, I think he does that more out of being nervous, wanting to ease his own nerves and probably wanting to ease everyone else's nerves as well, than purely craving attention. As you say, firefly, he's so pure.
Speaking softly, she told me about the many other productions that had filmed on her property. The current production cast and crew were very nice, she said, but her favorite was “The Brave” directed by and starring Johnny Depp.
“He was my best friend the whole time he was out here,” she said. “We were always together. He let me go wherever I wanted. He said ‘this is Suzy, she can be wherever she wants.’”
So, we’re not going to see Johnny Depp get beheaded anytime soon?
No, no! But, he would probably like that. By the way, Johnny is a killer guitar player. People are very surprised when they see him play.
And here’s another thing that I’ve got to mention. I keep reading in all these magazines how Johnny is 118-pounds or he’s drunk all the time, or he’s high, or he’s depressed. And I’m reading this, and he’s sitting across from me, I’ve never seen him look better in his life!
He’s happy. He’s playing guitar. He’s laughing. And he’s making five movies a year. I’m going, “What Johnny Depp are they talking about in this magazine?” It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen. How somebody has created this “other Johnny Depp” that they want the audience to see. That’s not the real Johnny Depp. It’s the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen.
Have you guys spent time together recently?
We did a European tour together. I’m one of those guys that buys every magazine, I went over to him and said, “Wow, you look a lot bigger than 118.” [Laughs]
I asked him, “How depressed are you?” He replied, “Do I look depressed to you?” I said, “Not a bit.” It’s just one of those things where, whoever is stewing up this anti-Johnny Depp thing, I don’t get it. I don’t understand where it’s all coming from.
Listen, if I saw him in the condition that I read that he was in — I’d be the first guy over his house saying, “Hey, we gotta talk. Let’s get you some help.” But I’ve never seen that guy.
Richards is said to prefer the liver and onions when he's in, and he and Depp were "the best tippers," Gonzalez once noted.
Gonzalez said that when Depp "had no job, before he became famous, he stayed here, drinking coffee. We used to have a phone booth on the other side. He waited for one of his agents to call for a job. He's one of the guys, you know. He became famous and he really, really loves Musso & Frank."
