What a great discussion! I'm loving all of your insights and find them very enlightening! I too have wondered why Johnny persists is saying he doesn't think he's attractive or sexy. By anyone's standards he's beautiful, so I don't understand why/how he doesn't 'get' that, especially being himself an artist, which presupposes a certain recognition/appreciation for beauty. But self-perception is an entirely different kettle of fish. No amount of evidence to the contrary can convince a person s/he is beautiful/attractive/sexy if at heart s/he doesn't believe it. I just don't know where Johnny got that particular belief.
On the other hand, I agree with those who say he knows the affect he has on 'the crowd' (both men and women) and sort of enjoys working it, playing with it, as it were. Not to his advantage, but the crowds' advantage! I think he knows he's making someone's day (maybe their whole life) by giving them a hug or a smile or a bit of conversation, or simply by making eye contact. That's a pretty special/powerful thing to be able to do! And I submit that he gets a great deal out of it as well, because the positive energy coming at him from 'the crowd' can't be denied, it's downright palpable! I was at the P3 premiere, so I know whereof I speak! I believe what he gets from 'the crowd' is in equal measure to what he gives, energy-wise. It's just that he has to keep it a boundary around it or else he'd explode!
Anyway, that's my two cents on the matter! Carry on!
I like to watch that interview at the rango premiere for "E" online with the big curvy blonde in a blue strapless gown. She's positively amazonian next to him but the way they flirt is really cute (to me -- I'm sure others might react differently).
Hey Brahms, which interview are you talking about? Do you have a link you can post?
Parlez -- AGREEEEEEEED!! Yeah, and about keeping a boundary around it -- it's necessary in more ways than one. When you see the size & fervor of the crowds, you can sense Jerry looking around anxiously at times. In some of these venues where things aren't as controlled as at, say Disney, you worry a bit as JD reaches out to people. This is what I was trying to say somewhere else when someone (I forget who) tried to remind me that he IS an actor & so probably not always really meaning his love of his fans but really I mean what you said parlez about the reciprocal energy between JD & his fans & how often he tries to "make their day" with a hug or handshake or a personal remark or warm eye contact -- you see him do ALL of those things endlessly at these premieres.
i have known a lot of guys i found sexy, some who regarded themselves as studs, even the artistic types, and some, like my husband, who just couldn't accept it. Sex appeal is not about looks, but it is also very subjective. Johnny IS an enigma!
I too am enjoying all this armchair psych. I know plenty of women who say they don't find Johnny attractive (go figure). Also, I believe Amber is an intellectual and mature beyond her years. I get that impression from video interviews. When I said that Johnny loved her for her mind, I wasn't really kidding.
I don't know enough about amber yet but from what I've read in interviews I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt for now. And Monet I can't do links but just go to YouTube & put in the description I gave (sans Amazonian blonde of course!).....

I was pretty neutral about Amber as an actor and a person. I did't know much about her, and what I did know didn't interest me enough to check her out, either. Now I've read something that I'm really hoping isn't true because it gives me the chills... but I still can't be bothered to dig for the info myself.
Does anyone know if she's into <pardon me while I vomit> Ayn Rand? If she is: RUN, JOHNNY!! RUUUUN!! Yes, she's gorgeous. Yes, she likes old cars and beat poets. But if Ayn Rand speaks to her soul, she's poison. Beat it the snuggle out of there before she rots your core.

I did a little poking around and it seems an old boyfriend turned her on to Rand when she was 16 and what she's held on to is the atheism, which is fine with me. If she gets all "kill the poor and needy" I hope someone burns her down (metaphorically, of course)but I didn't find anything like that. Still.... Objectivism sucks ass.
Well, you know Johnny has great empathy for all kinds of folks in trouble, whether it's to do with racism, bullying, greed, etc etc so hopefully the fact that he likes her so much indicates she's not wrongheaded like that. I can't imagine JD spending much time with a really cold narrow-minded gal no matter how sexy she is -- there's lots more fish in the sea for someone like johnny (not that there's ANYONE like Johnny!).
