We don't know what the official title of the movie will be, so I'll just put "Dr. Seuss" for now. When the title is announced, we can change the title for this thread.
This article says that Johnny has confirmed that Dr. Seuss characters will be included in the film about Dr. Seuss. This alludes to Johnny's comment in the Larry King interview that there would be some animation involved in the movie.

This is a portion of an interview done with the producer, Chris Melendandri of the "Dr. Seuss's The Lorax" animated movie that's in theaters soon. Melendandri will be working with Johnny on the film Johnny wants to do about Ted Geisel's (Dr. Seuss) life.
What are you looking to do with the live-action Dr. Seuss movie that you’re developing with Johnny Depp?
MELEDANDRI: It will be a live-action story about Ted Geisel’s life and partnership, for Johnny to play Ted Geisel. When you keep digging into his life, you keep finding more and more things. There’s more that I don’t know than I do know. Every time we dive into it, we find some other little gem.
Is Geisel’s widow supportive of the project, and the choice of Johnny Depp?
MELEDANDRI: Oh, absolutely! She got a really bad rap on The Cat in the Hat. She was depicted as somebody who was trying to exploit her husband’s work. She is incredibly protective. The movie got over-merchandised and didn’t work out, but she is extremely protective. She was his second wife, and played a very different role in his life than his first wife, who was intricately involved in his entire career and the publishing, and all of that. But, she’s got a really acute sense of what the essence of the work is, and a very strong point of view about how to protect that. Without that, it just dissipates and rules start getting broken. It’s just inevitable. I think every great property that wants to endure needs somebody to be the keeper, in that way, and she plays that role. It’s a value that she’s giving to it.
Is this going to be an ongoing relationship, as far as continuing to tell Dr. Seuss stories?
MELEDANDRI: There are other things that Audrey and I are talking about. The combination of my feelings about his legacy and her comfort level, having now been working together for eight years, it just makes sense for both sides to continue to do this. With any great artist from the 20th Century, whose work lends itself to this medium, or the film medium, in any way, there’s an opportunity and a responsibility to secure that legacy for future generations. If you’re not actively working on it, a lot of other things come into the global consciousness and things can get lost. An objective of ours is to make sure that we do what we can do to make him extremely relevant for future generations because he was talking about things that were absolutely timeless.
I just made this connection while out for a walk, because that's what walks are for. Remember when Johnny was last on Ellen and he was talking about Lily-Rose reading The Odyssey and asking him questions and he was "flummoxed," and Ellen joked "Don't you have anything you want to ask me about Charlotte's Web?" And Johnny said, "What happened to Dr. Seuss?" Remember this?
I am taking this as evidence that a) Dr. Seuss is on Johnny's mind and that therefore b) This project is still a go. It sounds so good, I'm hoping it's on for soon.
It seems that it's more than only in Johnny's mind...or that's according to this article from Hollywood Reporter (March 27, 2014) about a screenwriter
Bunin is currently writing Standard Loneliness Package for Fox Searchlight with John Krokidas directing. He also wrote Illumination’s Dr. Seuss biopic that has Johnny Depp attached as the children’s author as well as Skyjack, which Will Gluck is directed for CBS Films and is out to cast.
I seem to remember this being something being discussed...playing the creator or Dr. Seuss. Just saw where the film is happening, the director named, but Johnny isn't involved. A shame...another interesting project gone. I realize that new projects for him might be on hold. A lot of studios are probably antsy about casting him, not being sure how things are playing out. The "metoo" thing has escalated the reactions to his abuse allegations. Heck, recently an actress was forced to delete a photo she took with him, after her followers were outraged she would pose with an "abuser." This is the world we live in.
There is an existing Dr. Seuss thread in the Coming Soon section. I will move that thread here in a little while, and merge it with this thread Edited to add- okay, I've moved all of the earlier posts into lostsoul's thread
