I love Johnnys accent in this...but its his own...so YAY
So is that a Florida accent, then? Because it sure doesn't sound like Kentucky to my ear (I have relatives just about everywhere in the south BUT Florida and the Carolinas).
I don't love bleach-blond Johnny. Part of the reason I liked him in the first place was that he was dark, thin, and big-eyed. He looked like a typical surfer d00d with that haircut.
The first scenes put my brain in "make fun of this movie" mode. The cheezy "shuttle's eye" landing (I've seen real ones, including the footage from the unmanned russian orbiter), having the pilots--and the mission commander!-- go out on the spacewalk, the weird operating room that seems to have been designed purely for creepiness factor...if those first bits had been handled differently, maybe I wouldn't keep having the urge to give the rest of the movie an MST3K treatment.
Being predictable is a problem. I had the same problem with The Ninth Gate--it was too easy to tell what was coming next. I almost began to expect labels to appear, some things were so obvious. "Important Plot Point," "Satanic Cult Tattoo," "Evil Woman," etc. In The Astronaut's Wife, the labels I kept visualizing were things like, "Spooky Lighting," "Dramatic Moment," "Film Speed Slowed/Speeded Up to Symbolize How Character is Isolated," "Alien Ear-Sex Shot" (how many times did they show close-ups of Charlize's or Johnny's ears?). And the sex scene...well, kudos for innovative editing. I'll give them that. I have to wonder how much of it being a non-sex scene had to do with Johnny balking at it.
Here's something you don't see every day (and judging by how inactive this thread is, don't think about very often, either ) praise for The Astronaut's Wife! Yes, indeed, the film is included among 5 movies that are recommended to watch on Netflix this week
I's amazing how he can be that creepy on this Film. Only by his own mimic. Always so versatile. It's one of his Films which i haven't seen very often. Kinda oppressive and with Johnnys creepiness still more.
